FI Fault sorted
The problem has been sorted - it was the cam sensor.
I isolated the unit to check re a wiring fault and this made no difference.
The cam sensor itself is mounted on the front left of the cam box as you sit on the bike and is accessible through the left side air vent on the fairing.
The part cost £38 and is held in place by a single bolt.
The bike shop that ordered it for me said they had ordered three in the last week!!

PS - :idea: I did have problems trying to find out the led fault codes, mainly because I didn't want to spend £50 quid on a Kawasaki Workshop manual - would it be worth having the fault codes posted on this site within the Tech Section :?:

Tool box at the ready - I will let you know how it goes and whether or not the sensor needs to be replaced.

Yep that is code 23 for - and I quote from the Service Manual, "Cam sensor malfunction, wiring open or short". I guess if yours is doing that alot and mine a little - I might need to do something with mine soon too ie. check wires etc...
The service manual says that "the cam sensor must send one output signal to the ECU at the two cranking (when it senses the second cylinder cranking??). If the cam sensor system fails (signal missing or short) the ECU continues to ignite cylinders in the same sequence following the last good signal."

The fault code is two long flashes and three short - I can't get hold of a dealer manual.
Any suggestions or does someone have a list of the fault codes out there?? :?:

have same bike as you (a1) and mine just did it twice last week. Just cycled key and it started right up. I just assumed the engine used-up the shot of fuel the fuel pump gives when you first turn on the key, when it had firred but not started, so i didn't think there was any problem. Let me know if you do find one. |

get your service manuel out and put your ecu in diagnostic mode. check for history of codes..my cam sensor failed completely. f.i. lite would flash while cranking but would not start. cam sensor list for around 55 bucks...later killer

Fuel Injection Light - Intermittent fault 2000 zx12r a1
On two occasions the FI light has come on and flashed continuously whilst I have been starting the bike.
The first time, it turned over with the starter, but it didn't fire.
I left it for five minuites, tried again and it started perfectly and ran as usual.
The second time it did the same, but even after leaving it I couldn't start it.
