I like many of you good folks here, love road racing. The two tracks I have frequented are
Gratton Raceway and Gingerman. The ZX12R is of course not a zx6 but so what.
A 12 is a lot of fun. And since I have spare parts, I’m going to put together a dedicated track bike.

I picked up a salvage frame awhile ago. Beat up pretty good. Cracked in the middle.
So I had it stripped. I asked the guy not to sand blast it. He said no problem. He’d use something not so abrasive. But of course, he sandblasted it. Aggravating.

Bob at Daredevil Fab started by fixing the crack and welding up a mess for the battery cover boss. I shaped it and drill/tap the new hole.

No project would be complete unless you get a box from ScottDavisRacing! Lol

I'll be watching this thread closely, as you know I have a 1287 and have been on several track days, but have been toying with the idea of a track dedicated 12. I agree it's no litre bike, but then I'm no Rossi.

It would mean taking the 12 off the road completely, but then it would get a little lighter! I have the Ninja H2 for road and track anyway.

Over the many years I learned a ton from all the work of everybody. Just like to keep it going.

Je vs mtc

As you can see the dome on the mtc piston is nearly the same as a je. Confirming that mtc doesn't know how to calculate compression ratio lol. These are nowhere near the advertized 14.7:1. They are about a point high on all of their zx12 piston specs including turbo stuff. What they can do is build a much better piston. This is significantly lighter than a je even with the longer skirt. The pin is also much lighter. This means it will rev a little quicker, and have slightly better high rpm power from reduced recprocating mass. The rings are thinner but sit a little bit higher so I would not consider this a great piston for a heavy shot of nitrous. For NA or small doses of spray it's perfect/better than je.
Another note on the skirts. I've had multiple builds show the 1287 JE piston rocking in the bore and tagging the head on the exh side, sometimes even scrubbing the side of the valve pocket. Other builders have seen the same. The longer skirt on the MTC reduces rock substantially and will likely prevent the damage the JEs seem to get a lot of the time.
Overall these seem to be well worth the extra money as compared with the very common JE piston option.

Not exactly what I want to read about the JE pistons!
Though I have had mine on the track and done about 20K kms / 12,400+ miles on the JE 1287 with no mechanical problem.
Not over fussed really, thing still goes great.

These pistons are jewelry!!! Scott polished them up. Took all the sharp edges off and they are beautiful.
I love boxes from SDR...
