Hey guys..
I was referred to check with you ZX11 guys, as our bikes are very similar..

my clutch tensioner came into contact with the clutch basket..
(after doing some searching.. I guess its a problem)
that ZRX guy "kwick" sells a couple "fixes"
but spending another 100 bucks on something that shouldnt* be a problem in the first place hardly seems like a fix.

My buddy showed me a couple drag ZX11's that have the tensioners modified or welded..

Can anyone shed some more light on these modifications/improvements?
What is the best path to take here?

Im having some real problems finding a replacement clutch basket assembly for my ZX10..
Im scanning ebay but I havent had much luck.

Can I use another clutch assy?
What are my options?

Thanks in advance.. I just want to get back on the road..

Gpz1000rx clutch?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry your tensioner fubar'd your clutch.Your only chance is try a unit from a GPZ1000RX or 'C' model ZZR11.These are the closest engine cousins if you get my drift.Later bikes had a modified tensioner with a cut out in the blade to 'miss' the front pressure plate, which was also changed slightly. If the basket on yours is totalled a newer model one may be your only chance,it's specific to that model only.FYI the semi automatic tensioner fix works,it tensions the starter chain correctly when the starter spins and when the engine fires it stops the tensioner blade from being fired back into the clutch by the shock loading of the chain when the engine starts.Hope this helps or at least gives you a few more options.Good luck.

OP -I had the same thing happen.

The affected motorcycles are:
ZX10, ZX11C, ZX11D, GPZ750r, GPZ900r, GPZ1000rx, GPZ1100, ZZR1100, Concours, ZRX1100 & ZRX1200,.. possibly the ZL900..

I dont have a welder and I dont know how to weld how do I modify the tensioner so i wont have this happen again? Its starting to clear up and I want to be able to ride my bike again..

If its in a garage that means you can work on it.
You can replace your clutch.

I think what he's trying to tell you, via the three fiches, is a commonality in part numbers.
Bingo.
Do you get it, yet?
The tensioner fix is pick your favorite aftermarket solution. The one with the aluminum sleeve looks like the easiest.

Well.. all you have to do is *fix* the tensioner.
The Concourse mod..
The length of tube is the most simple mod I have seen, and still lets the stock part function as normal.
If you measure the length you need.. you can go to any hardware store, and most likely they will cut it for you.
You may be able to get a piece of scrap pipe for FREE.

Hello i have two zx10s 1988 one for parts as i have found the same problems parts can be hard to find. I have had zx10s for many years now and i read about the tensioner problems checked the spare bike and it had marks on the clutch where it to had been hitting. Checked the one i ride and it looks like new i do i lot of miles on the bike and didnt wont any problems so i made this up.I had seen photos so i made my own one up.you set it manually and with no moving parts to fail hopfully no problem i will check its adjustment every 30000km or so if im not in the clutch area before then.As for the clutch what i would do is take a few photos of the old clutch with measurments and head to a bike wreaker and have a look at a few baskets i have had to do this with different things over the years. The zzr11 clutch i would put money on that it should fit or even GPz9 but you may need heavier clutch springs on the 900 i hope something here is of some use to you good luck.

Well taking it apart is half the battle

The reason why I posted the 3 different Schematic Exploded View Diagrams was for you
to realize the subtle differences, as well as the SAME.. or.. COMMON parts. :headscratch:
Notice how the basket, and bunch of other parts have the same part #'s?

your bike - zx1000 - has a SOLID unsprung HUB.
ZX/ZZR100 - zx1100 - has a SPRING loaded *slipper style* dampener(sp?) HUB
Concourse - zg1000 - has a FULL SPRING dampening HUB (because shaft drive)

88 ZX10 Clutch Basket Assy on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/131155458195
Note: the woodpecker marks on the pressure plate, and the absence of the washer..
It seems to me the tensioner may have went on this bike too.. :headscratch:

The other guys did point you in the right direction first..
on the clutch & the tensioner..

zing1100 gave you the heads up on the "zzr1100" clutch..
I merely pointed out that the zx11 & the zzr1100 are the same bike.
He also pointed out difference between early & late model tensioners
- the cutout on the alt. chain guide that misses the front pressure plate -

I have to agree with hagrid on the "Concourse" tensioner mod with the length of tube.
(can anyone provide a approx. measurement?)
and he found you a link for your clutch that didnt say NLA.

You're a very polite young man, double L. And I look forward to collaborating with you in the future.

B.u.r.n.e.r. is quite the ingrate therefore I recommend he fashion a new clutch basket from locally sourced poos and see how that goes.
