The 12 only came with a 6 speed box. If a gear is missing then something is wrong with the gears or gear selector mechanism. Do you know which gear isn't there?
It suggests that when you're trying to shift, something is stopping it, rather than not engaging somewhere. My suspicion is that you have a bent shift fork, but as I mentioned before, start by removing the clutch basket and check the shift mechanism. If it's not the shift mechanism, then you're into engine out territory and splitting the crankcases.
