Do we have any 18 wheelers on this site? If so, I have a question for you. Do you even have a clue when you lose a tire? I bet I had to dodge 50 alligators in 300 miles of riding yesterday.

I drove a big truck for 5 years and now work inside the office for a trucking company in Indy. The alligators you see on the highway are mostly recaps that have come off the tire. The company I drove for did not use recaps and spent the extra dough to replace the whole tire when it needed it. Generally recaps are fine except where the temperature is always hot. I've had a tire blow on two occasions and you definately know when it blows. It's like a grenade going off and I'm not lying. You hear a loud boom and see pieces of radial tire going everywhere. To make matters worse your trailer starts to dance on you. Never ride close behind a truck because you will be wearing shrapnal when the tire blows. TIRE INFLATION ON SEMI TIRES ARE 100 PSI COLD!!! Like I said, it's like a grenade going off.

Alien, I'm sure you'll agree but do you think driving a truck has made you a better rider? I think everybody should take a trip with a driver at least once in their life to see just how many idiots there are out there. I've transfered what I learned in the truck over to my riding habits. I put myself in a position out on the road to be seen, give myself an out, and anticipate what the other guy is going to do before they do it. Are you an Owner Op? I never pulled doubles but hear they're alot of fun in high winds and icy weather.HAHA

A few weeks ago I am heading down the I-85 at night,
I'm moving along pretty good as I approach a 18 wheeler in
the fast lane, as I close in on him I see his emergency
flashers going....I slow to see whats up, he is in the passing lane remember, and then I see it..........

His very right outside rear is disintegrating and it is just about to chunk off the recap, I grab a handful of front brake, but it is too late, here comes a one foot piece of rubber right for my head

I duck in behind the windscreen and it passes over my head and creams the car behind me..

The driver then gets over, I click down a few gears and I am out of harm's way, but it was a close call....

I had a chuck of tire the size of a golf ball hit me in the knee Saturday on I-77 at about 85 mph. My FirstGear textile looms employ a nice set of knee pads. It sort of felt like Debi hitting me when I call her, "Skank Girl." In other words, I felt it, but, it was just a little love tap. I'm just glad it missed my faster silver 12.

I ride mostly but occasionally drive. And these these rides and drives are about once a month due to school.
So I am fortunate to say I have never had one blow out but was involved with a slide into a ditch that tipped us. Not fun.

There was a Harley guy here in the area that was a pretty popular guy, he headed up alot of the benefit rides for underprivileged children, abused women, so forth.

About 2 years ago he was riding about 5 miles from my house and didn't notice a nice chunk of retread laying at 90 degrees in the road ahead of him.

He ran over it, and the front tire swung it up between the fender and tire and, well, 60 mph endo.

No helmet on, don't know if a helmet would have helped in that case or not. Not a good thing.

I heard the police said the strip of retread weighed 40 lbs.

Dangerous stuff...

Question. When you see retread on the road, and you can _safely_ pull over and _safely_ get it off the road, do you?

I do, if it's real safe. I'd hate to know that I just dodged a chunk of retread that the next guy died on....

I am afraid to say I had never even thought of removing it from the road. (Maybe because here there is always lots of traffic and stepping on the road would be suicide.)
But if I am in someplace where it looks like I can do something about it, I will, now that the thought is in my mind.

Yeah, thats why I underlined safely. I would never attempt it on the Valley Highway, when we have to ride on it, we know its a fricking crapshoot what you might find in the highway, and ride appropriately (read: seriously tuned in, slightly edgy), but if I'm on a road a little off the beaten track, where I safely can, I will.

Alot of times before the guy I am talking about died, I'd swerve and miss it and think good riding, Blitz.

After that I realized good attention at that time, and good evasive move. What if I'd have been doing 110 looking at the speedo at the second?

Road hazards suck, and I figure if it takes 2 minutes out of my ride, well the potential value could be unlimited.

Just a thought for all you guys...

I drove a truck on the farm & was grandfathered in for my CDL. I took all the test for the Haz Mat, tanker, doubles etc.

It is true that truckers are better bike riders & all around drivers.

I don't have any problem with truck tire debris as it is a fact of life, among others, as we ride the roads.

The friggin BIRDS are my problem. They keep crashing into my helmet!

ALTHOUGH WE ALL RIDE BIKES IN HERE LET'S ALL REMEMBER THAT WE ALL DRIVE GAGES AS WELL.. JUST A POINT TO REMEMBER IT'S A LOT EASIER TO STOP 2,000 - 5,000 LBS THEN IT IS TO STOP 70,000 - 80,000 LBS COMBINATION VEHICLE! AT 60MPH IT TAKES A CAGE ABOUT 120 - 170 FEET TO STOP WHERE AS FOR ME IT'S ABOUT 300 TO 400 FEET PROVIDED I DO NOT JACKNIFE.. REMEMBER IF YOU CAN'T SEE MY MIRRORS YOUR FREE GAME
