Gentleman I'd greatly appreciate some advice. Have a new to me 2000 model full Muzzy titanium exhaust and Power Commander. Runs super strong. Only issue I have is exhaust note is overly loud and attracts the wrong attention. What are your thoughts to me putting the stock exhaust system back on with a power commander? Will I need to retune because it will be running too rich? I would gladly give up a little bit of power for a lot less decibels. Stock sprockets by the way. Thank you!

Interesting problem to have. I have an Akrapovic and it isn't loud enough. If that Muzzy can is like new, send me a PM if you want to sell.

If you go back to stock exhaust you shouldn't need a power commander unless there have been other mods to the bike.

Does the muzzy can need repacking?

The stock muffler is restricted. Even if you remove the catalytic converter.
de-cat oem head pipes are actually very good for a stock motor. Oem head pipes with a aftermarket free flowing canister makes excellent power. More than a muzzy down low. Only gives a few away on top. But this combo would be louder than stock.
Stock pipe/canister with no cat, would probably benefit from the power commander and a good dyno tune.

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate the offer and details within. GREAT idea on repacking...never thought of that. Investigating the materials now... that could be the problem. The original owner of the bike definitely didn't repack the muffler! Told me he installed the system a couple months after purchasing the bike new.

Doesn't muffler packing (on a straight through design) make the exhaust noise louder? For example, if you took the can apart and wrapped the tube with exhaust wrap and put it back, wouldn't it be louder than if there was no packing?

Or is it that the echo in the can makes it louder?

Just wondering.

No packing at all would be much louder. Packing makes it quieter.

Why not fit a dB-killer baffler inside to dampen the sound? Not sure if Muzzy has default one's for your type but there are plenty to find that should fit. Your exhaust end should have a 6mm hole for a bolt and if not you can easily drill one to fit a dB-killer.

Then it has to be the echo... Because by design the muzzy exhaust simply has a tube that goes straight through the outer shell. That inner tube has holes it in that lets exhaust gases enter the chamber.

I guess all those gases bounce around the empty chamber making it louder.

I would still think, as rmk suggested, is that the biggest change in db would be by fitting some type of silencer like a db-killer... Anything else would just be adjusting levels of loud.

My muzzy was loud, but not loud enough that I had a problem with it. My Honda VTX1300 v-twin with slip-on exhaust was much louder when I got it.

Doubt it'll do much though, an open pipe is still an open pipe that produces loud noise.

Meanwhile, I've swapped my Polish Dominator aftermarket open pipe back to the original because I've just grown out of the sound it seems. Even though I absolutely love how brutally low pitched the sound is during low RPM (especially riding through small streets) and screaming insane with high RPM to the point the sound even scares me, I just feel it somehow makes me ride lower RPMs because I'm too subconsciously worried about the noise I produce.

Did you take the hex head bolts out and pop the end cap off? Any pics of what’s inside?
The original muzzys packing was a very tight wrap and really stuffed into the shell. I wanted my pipe louder, was a lot of work to get the tightly packed guts out of the shell.
If you wrap good and tight and stuff it in the shell, it will knock the sound down.

My 2000 picked up 20 hp with the muzzy ti. What ever they complain about it will not be power. It makes the idle hunt. If you repack it and it is too loud put in ear plugs and be more careful of where you take chances. I just made my 2000 back to stock. I still love it. I'm 1 down in the front. With modern 190 rear. It won't run 9.10 in the quarter but it has never turned like this with the 200 rear tire either.

My dyno tuner tuned my bike with a full muzzy, it never hunted at idle, it was nice and smooth. It was smooth even from a cold start.

Hey I apologize for not jumping back into my original post. The household has been down since I cut through the FiOS internet cable with loppers cutting out roots. Good Times. But as we're going to be down for the next four or five days I will be doing a lot of DIY including pulling the cap off the muzzy and repacking. Will definitely let you guys know what I see with pictures. And yes the idle on my 2000 model hunts like crazy when the bike warms up do not love that about it.

Packed the Muzzy. Original packing was holding up well. Have not ridden her since I completed it...but at idle she sounds the same.
This is what I was guessing... Maybe it will be quieter at higher RPMs when riding, but I just don't see how the packing would make much of a sound difference (in dbs, not tone) because of the straight through design.
