Make sure you put the telephone cord into the proper jack on the back of the modem. Put it in the line jack, not the extension telephone jack.

Were there any electrical storms or power surges lately? Modems tend to be very sensitive to power fluctuations.

Years ago when I still used a modem (didn't know they were still even being made ), we had a lightning storm and a surge through the phone line fried the modem. I sent it back to the factory, and they confirmed it. Offered to fix it under warranty, I told them to keep it went broadband....

I'm not sure what happened, But my modem on my home system has stopped working.
* I have checked the line with a phone, it is working
* All the diagnostics say the modem is operating properly
* When I try to connect, I get error 680, no dial tone ???
* It is a Compaq with a 56K modem

Any ideas??? I have tried everything I can think of.

Might try re-installing the modem software. When you know you have the right disk...delete the modem (from the add/remove hardware option on your control panel and re-install it.

That was sometimes worked for me in the past when equipment malfunctions.

Or it could be all the BAM post-whoring has fried the modem....

mwr - I mis-informed you. go to phone/modems under your control panel and select the modems tab. Then you'll have to option to remove the modem. But you have to have the disk inhand before deleting......I am not going to say why I emphasize that.

If you know the model of the modem - you can download the software for it at work and save to disk before going home.

Best of luck

Your computer should've come with a recovery disk that has all the drivers on it that were installed at the factory. Look for the disk and open it up and look under the drivers folder. If you can find the ones to the modem, then go ahead and delete your existing modem software and reinstall the drivers from your disk.

Not sure if it is related, I have digital cable, and with that hooked up the phone is dead, but I do have it disconnected right now waiting on service, I think lightning may have struck
the line, but I'm not sure. The computer was on a surge protector last week, and it did the same thing, coneected it straight to the wall and it was working for a while, I dunno...
