Anybody seen this dyno drag thing?
I just found out about them. Maybe I am behind the times. My brother in law called me from Illinois and told me He and his brother went to some bike event up there. They had a guy that showed up in a tractor trailer and on the trailer was computer equip., two dyno's and a Christmas tree. $25.00 US. for each bike to run. They run two bikes at the same time and the computer spits out the results. Hp, Tq, 100ft and 1/4 mile time and speed. He said some guys blew their motor's up on the dyno trying to beat the other bike. I would like to see one of these events.

I have done the Dyno Drag thing. Had a blast. Ran a 9.52 @ 143 mph. My bike is stock. Ran a 9.55 @ 142 slipping the rear wheel on the drum. The trailer that I ran on also had a set up for a 1/2 mile run. Mine ran it in 15.03 @ 166 mph. The bike dynoed 153 hp. I thought that was a little low, but at the time I had a connection not on that is on the back of the motor and my FI light was on. Wouldn't start real well when it was cold either. Would like to do it again now that it is fixed. If you get the chance, I would do it.

My understanding is that dyno drags are VERY hard on your bike. One dyno operator explained to me that because of the extreme amount of drag created by the drum, it will eat up a tranny in a heartbeat if you are not careful. Because of the drag, it is also necessary to powershift. Now I'm not sure if this is the case or if the dyno used in the dyno drag is the same as a normal dyno, but it sure made me stop and think.

Let me get this straight: Overly optimistic times, more wear on the tranny, and 1 run costs more than several @ a real drag strip...Sounds kinda gimicky...but if you do it one time just for shits and giggles I suppose it ain't too bad. Glad I know about the excessive wear so I won't actually run on it.

Overly optimistic times,
I wouldn't go that far. When the bike is on the dyno drag trailer you don't have to slip it off the line, you can just dump the clutch and pin, don't have to fight a wheelie off. I think the time was pretty accurate if you take the launch the factor out of it.

granted, but in the real world wheelies and wheelspin are part of launching, hence why I said 'overly optimistic'.

You and I are both in the low 10s @ about 142 in the real world....vs "Ran a 9.55 @ 142"

True...and I guess since you're running against someone its still fun....but @ the drag strip you get to do it in front of everyone and leave several bike lengths on them and while you are taking off your helmet, they are still collecting their time slip
