klx650r street legal kit help

Hi i have a 1993 klx650r with a baja designs street legal kit. It is all unhooked and i am trying to figure out the wiring. This is the kick start version and has no battery. I was wondering if i need a battery for this kit to work or does it all run off the stator. I am currently looking at wiring diagrams to figure out the connections and alot of them show a battery and i was wondering if it is needed or that is just the road versions with electric start. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
