Who have ridden a kx500 how is the power anything good about it?

The KX500 is one heck of a bike. Hard to beat 500 cc's of 2 stroke power! I've never ridden one (been on a CR500 though), but gave serious consideration to buying one before I bought a KX250. After buying the 250 I was really glad I went that direction. The 500 is really too much bike for most types of riding (motocross and any tight trail riding). It's really in it's element on wide open desert racing, open fast motocross tracks, dune riding, or steep hill climbing. Anything else would be a lot more fun on a 250, which is considerably more nimble!

The other option is the newer 4-stroke 450's. They've got a ton of power (not as much as the kx500, but not too far back either). Plus they're torqy as all getout. If you do go the 4-stroke route, try to get a newer model if possible (2008 or later) as they've made a lot of headway in more nimble handling and lighter weights lately.

My recommendation is to definitely get a dirt bike! But get every piece of protective gear to boot - your body will thank you for that!

Rode one a few years back, didn't buy it though, bit rough, so,

Went and bought another 1982 YZ490J.

The KX is better than the YZ because its liquid cooled,

But if I was going liquid cooled 2 stroke, I would go for the Honda CR500.

The later 4 strokes are very expensive to repair engine wise, but you do have the advantage of much better suspension, which means you just crash at a higher speed :rotflmao:

Love the 500 two strokes, easy to work on, and they do have torque, and they go like hell, and that's what you want them for:eek:hno:

I raced a KX500 for 2 seasons (89 and 90) Had to get a 250 as the tracks got more and more technical and the 500 became a bit of a liability. 1st and 2nd gears are dangerous out of sharp turns. I would start in 3rd or 4th and that would be all that i needed unless it was an open track then 5th would be used. Steep hills do not exist on this bike!!
KIPS system: check worm drive for alignment before putting the jug on. Other than that keep plenty of gas handy!!!
I still ride a 2004 CR250R regularly and will be getting the CR500R back on the track soon.

The PV KX500 motor is awesome, but the frame/suspension/plastics are really, really, really dated. I've ridden both and owned a CR500 for several years. You really need to decide what type of riding you're going to do with the KX. It's rake/trail numbers are more relaxed and therefore lend themselves to highspeed, WOT situations (sand dunes, desert racing, hill climbs, road supermoto etc.). The stock carb is a great unit but can be difficult to tune (if you're a carb novice), especially when you start playing with the PV timing. These two things alone are why most opt for the CR; It's more user (read:idiot) friendly and really a turn-key, all-arounder type of bike. The KX also doesn't have nearly the aftermarket available to it nor are there as many AF kits/conversion companies. Also be very careful reading your plugs/piston wash as rebuilds are very expensive and IIRC the KX can only go 1 over.

One of my favorite bikes of all time!!! I never raced competitive motocross, but rode alot of enduro/woods riding. Brutal Power and will do about 90mph stock, which is really fast for dirtbike. Most people can't even get it started. LOL. I really want another one. :thumbup:

I think its something wrong with the bike? The front wheel is not pointing up at all my gearings are 15/45. I have a fmf pro series on.

Riden the bike only twice and I think its something wrong with the kips?

the only bad thing about the kx 500's power is learning that you dont have the space you need to slow down . right there is the truth. itll out accellerate anything on the dirt...hands down. but you need to remember.. it doesnt slow down as fast.

I owned a KX500 back in the day, absolutly amazing but I'm a woods guy and trail riding this bike wasn't designed for. At all... That being said I had a blast with it in the trails it's such a beast! I outran my buddies older brother on the street with it against his FZR600. Smoked it real good to. Worst part of a KX500 is starting it! I'm a big guy and took all my weight to kick that bitch. Loads of fun though. I sold it after few yrs and got a RM250 which was much better for the dirt riding I did.

Was on the fence years ago about getting an other open class 2 stroke. Since Cal has screwed it up for us law abiding citizens, it has no place except a track now. Bummer.

You can still ride SRVA or BLM land from Oct to May... My sons KX100 2 stroke and my KX450 4 stroke are both red stickers.
There's a lot of year round riding areas too...but I've never been to them. We stick with Ocotillo Wells.

I was a Dist #38 racer, back in the 1980's. (Fuddpucker Racing Team) and rode Yamaha's YZ 465H's. Plaster City's "King of the Desert" race was always a favorite of mine. Used to train out in "Rockotillo" back in the day. We'd go during the week, when it was empty. Still remember going WFO on the San Filipe Wash. Did some "sand" work at Devil's Slide, before it was a camp ground.
