I am thinking about modifying the stock exhaust on my
'01 ZX-12R.

I'm debating removing the CAT and drilling out the can
a bit.

I am actually thinking of buying another stock exhaust
to do this to as I don't know if I want to mod my only
one. Thinking that since Ontario already does emmisions
on cars and trucks that they may on bikes at some time.
I may want a completely stock exhaust to switch back
to.

Is it worth doing? Or should I hold out and get
an after market system?

Reasons to do the mod:

Deeper sound
More flow = couple hp I hope
I like the stock look, most aftermarket cans I have seen LOOK aftermarket. And I like the stealth look.
I am thinking I may add King's NOS kit, and it requires removing the CAT.
Cheaper than a full system, would leave me some $$
to do other mods, undertail, front flushmounts, SS brake lines, etc.....

What is everyone's experience with this?
I know some people modded the stock system.
Was it worth doing?

This mod added 23 hp on the dyno...with mapping, etc.

And the sound is awesome...I've done it to two bikes
so far...mine and Frank's...both PMB '02s

Cut out the cat, and welded the tip to the stock
pipe, then ground off the weld and buffed...

Cost...$49.00
Time, 2hrs.
Smiles...a lifetime!!!

238, Not sure I like the look of that stubby can.
I bet it is loud though.
Definately interesting, and unique.
23 hp does seem a bit high for a gain from that alone
though. But if it is true, then good job!!

Maybe it should be Blitz and the others that have
done stuff similar to his Mod instructions on the site
that I should question. I am thinking of following that
guide that he put together. Does it give as good a
results as it appears to?
Any real negatives?

There are a couple guys that are selling their stock
pipes around here, they want $100-$150.
I am thinking of grabbing one, and modding it, leaving
my original one stock in case I ever want it.
I am hesitant to drill out the CAT, it is a mod that you
can not go back on.

I saw a guy at the dragstrip who made a pipe, a bolt on. Look the same appearence of the stock except no catalyser and mostly straight pipe. The diameter of the exhaust hole are a bit bigger than stock, and the can was made starting with an aluminium pipe who are machined.

The entire thing are loud but seem efficient, but it's home made, no PC3R etc....
I don't know if he have a big gain in HP (the guy want to dynoed it), but he do good 1/4 mile time, and willy 1/4 time too. But when I will see the guy again I ask him if he dynoed it.

But it's loud because almost straight pipe, but it's nice looking.

Taking the CAT out is simple & reduces HEAT big time!

I did all the suggested cannister mods & found NO gain whatsoever. The titanium isn't easy to drill through & you will waste some $ on bits.

I'd suggest that you leave it stock or go for a full system.

I just did the mod last night. Took out the Cat and drilled the holes in the muffler. I can tell any diffence in the sound at all. It is the same loudness as before. As for the hp gain you will never notice 1 or 2 hp so it's hard to tell.. I did it for the sound as I thought it would be a little louder but it appears I might be looking for a can now....Rizzo

Odd that you guys didn't notice any changes from the stock can mod. I did it soon after getting my bike for the same reasons...more power, more noise, less heat. Knocked out the stock cat, drilled lotsa holes in the can. It makes a pretty big difference in the snarl vs. stock, especially over 4k rpms. In fact, Muzbgreen (from another site) is going to trade me his stock can for mine, since I now have a full Hindle and he compared my stock can to the Muzzy of the guy we were riding with.

Maybe you didn't drill enough holes? Did you drill through both the mesh layer and the solid core behind it? I had a 1/2" Hammer drill and a titanium bit, and just punched as many holes as I possibly could. It definitely makes a difference in noise if not power, and is a worthwhile mod, imho.

I drilled 6 holes in it. How many did you drill? I just can't tell any difference at all. Yes I drilled thru both layers of the can, the mesh and the plate behind it. Anybody know any Canadian distributors of cycle parts. The exchange and duty on bringing stuff up to Canada from the U.S. is outrageous....Rizzo

and FORGET cheaping OUT! . There ISN'T any genie in that "stock canister" no matter how hard you rub drill, weld or crazy glue!

There are a couple slip ons that will give you kick ass noticeable power increase & sound without mapping!

Jere, I believe in being honest, and I don't want to offend you, but that cut-off can is butt ugly.

It looks like, well, a stock can that was cut-off.

But, beauty is in in the of the beholder.

Now Blitz...I don't make fun of your bike, where the
color looks like the butt of my monkey!!!

Blitz..I'm not offended...here's my order of
importance...which may not be yours...

1) Does it make more power.

2) Does it weigh less.

3) Does it give me better ground clearance.

4) Does it keep the bike cooler.

5) Does it sound better.

6) Do I like it...

Well, the answer to ALL six is yes...so I'm not offended
if you don't like it...really. It works for me as it
does everything above...

I should have mentioned that looks is the least important
factor of all my mods. On the condition that the
workmanship is very good...

I'll probably paint the bike all flat black, so it just
fades away, and doesn't stand out...less likely to
get stolen...

But remember one thing...pretty bikes don't
automatically win races...technical first, looks second.
So when I leave your butt on the highway, you can
look at my ugly tip!!! lol

Blitz...one day we'll ride, and have a good time...And
I'm glad your bike is red and slower, that way they won't
see me, but they'll catch you!!!

Be there. We'll have fun, and by the time its all over, nobody will really care who won the race.

But you will remember being there. Thats what it's all about.

bad ass lookin pipe there! I like it but haven't the skill to mod mine that way. Like I said Rizzo, don't waste your time with that stock pipe.

I did all that shit last week and tried half a dozen differenet variations.
