I have noticed a light clunking noise when I first start up my 02. It happens in the first 5 seconds or so after starting the engine cold (10 or so hours of non-use).

I assist the throttle to keep in at about 1000rpm when intially for about 10-15 seconds to assist the oil pump when starting it, then let it warm up at idle which is around 800rpm.

Is this normal? Like I said, the only time I ever hear it is when starting in cold and it does in one to two times in the first few seconds after starting but not all the time.

Every now and then mine backfires through the intake when cold, a lot of bikes do that.

My 02 has done that since it was new. I have 7500 miles on it now with no engine problems (except the stator wire harness oil leak that everyone has). It sounds like one cylinder fires too soon before the piston gets to the top and kind of coughs for a second. It only happens when cold and at low revs. You can feel the vibration throughout the bike. Not a good feeling. I don't think it is a problem but what do I know. I chalked it up to a high compression/preformance engine situation. The thing just don't like to run slow.

Hey Jiggy,
Just a single clunk, but it isn't that loud.

Could be small backfire or maybe the clutch as Avenger had mentioned.

My 2000 Red still does it with 11,500 miles on her!!!...The 2002 Blue is much quieter...

Its the cold start up Crank noise and if you adjust the cable on the cold start lever it helps keep the idle higher and theres less noise!!!...Or hold the throttle at 2000rpm...

Am I missing something here?

I use the high idle and on cold start's she idle's around 1400-1750 or so. For about 3-4 minute's and I slowly idle it down to 1100 rpm's which is my normal idle RPM's. Once temp bar move's then I saddle up.

If Jessie Jame's had a ZX12R I'd ride with him.

WD...you only need to let it idle for 2 1/2 minutes, thats when the motor is being fully lubricated!!!
