Anyone out there have experience in the saddle of both the 02 ZX12 and the older models? I'm curious of any impressions about the motor tweaks.

I'm a new 12 owner and recently started womping a bit on my bike. I love this giant motor. But I'd always heard how "peaky" the old 12 was. So, the first time I revved my 02 up to 10,500 I was expecting some kind of RUUUUSH at the higher rpms. It never came.

Don't get me wrong, the bike was pulling like a freight train and I looked down to see 140 on the speedo after about 5 seconds. But I found the power delivery to be very linear. The bike pulls from about 5000rpm and stays pretty consistent up to redline. Can't really run it through the gears as I'd be breaking the sound barrier by 5th. But I'm curious if this is the same type of delivery the old 12's have.

I've never ridden a pre-02 12 so I really don't have a clue. I've ridden Busa's and I have to say that my 02 is much more usable and smoother in its delivery. It's not peaky at all. Or maybe I'm just a pussy on the throttle. Not sure.

What are your impressions?

ZX - I have an '02 and I agree with you regarding the smoothness of the power curve. Over 6K rpm's the bike pulls harder and harder all the way to redline. Feels like everytime I get off the bike after a few "spirited" miles my arms have been stretched a little longer <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

But maybe Angelo12r will let me have a crack at the 2000 model on Sunday and I can offer a comparison.

The stock gearing may be the reason as it allows the bike to increase the speed more over a shorter RPM range rather than the tach wrapping around like lightning. I know I am not describing this the right way but some of you may be able to follow my "random" train of rationale.

ZXCecil, I have the same impression you do. I've got 1800 miles on it now so I dont think it is a breakin issue. My last bike was a ZX11 so from what I've been hearing about the 12, I was a little disappointed (I expected a radical difference in accelleration) but I still love the 12, even went to 17T

I really don't know if i should add this but,

From 6000 to redline it's a flash on my 01 model. It's a rocket ship from 6000 to redline. It's sometime's difficult to switch gear's fast enough cause the tach needle is going accross the dial so fast.

But i do have the faster Silver model, I bet it's the 02 paint slowing ya down.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

My 02 is not peaky at all, it just pulls harder and harder as I approach the upper rpm. I still have not seen it to redline. Usually 9500 is a plenty. I may have had it to 10000 one time.

Of course I only have 605 miles so far. Maybe your getting used to it. Ask a buddy on a 600 to help you do a little test run, roll on from about 6000 rpm in any gear and see what happens, that ought to reassure you.

when I went in to take those pics tonight that 17t said, "hey slack ass when you going to put me on?"<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

Maybe Saturday a.m. I get that thing on there. Had it for a couple weeks, just did not want to start taking things apart again so soon<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)">

Is your 12 still stock? Have you upgraded your exhaust yet?? Get an Akro and K&N's. I did, and I've been very happy.

What I understand from talking with the guys at Factory Pro; San Rafeal, CA., the Akro works so well with the 12, the need for a PC-III or equivalent isn't really needed. Not the case with the Muzzy; you'll need the PC-III with a map for the "02" 12R if you go with the Muzzy.

If you're inclined to squeeze [all] the power from your 12 that you can, you'll need to re-map, and tweek the timing when changing to any of the aftermarket racing exhaust systems. Remember, the "02" has the injection and timing tweeked to make it a more "user-friendly". Installing a new exhaust, PC-III or equivalent, plus re-mapping with the DJ250, or at Factory Pro, will let you really dial it in for optimum performance, and it won't be so docile.

I have come to realize that the heavier crank and flywheel in the '02 doesn't allow the bike to rev quite as quickly as the 01. It was like a lightbulb going on when I read the list of 130 modifications they did. Dunno whether or not this makes the bike any faster or slower.......leave that one up to Dave Bogus - the Sunday drag racer if he should ever find a 2001 against a 2002.

Dave.....????

Hope this answers any questions.

Tainui, I would think that if the 12 were a road race bike. They would have

a very light flywheel and crank. I think the heavy stuff is for smoothness. I

may be wrong, I'm just thinkin' here.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

Tuesday night we're leaving the trusty Blue Goose ( mex food ) bike night meet. A group gathers behind me to go on a little late night " spirit ride " r-1's, 929's, gsxr 7's and a few 1's

etc... just as we are rolling out a BLUE '02 pulls inline and

gives a slight nod my way... by the time we get to the highway I can tell this guy has something to prove w. ole pinky ( RED ) we work our way through traffic and to a good ole straight away... to make a long story longer...

wen tried several roll ons from 4th,5th, 6th... everytime,

he would jump in frt for 1/2 a bike length, then I just seemed to pull past him like he was lettin' off... now , keep in mind we are both equal w/ 17th and slip ons... oh and all the others

they just played catch up all night... one guy even pulled up and asked " how fast were you going ? " like I have time to look over 150... LMOA , he said he was looking at 165 and

we were both walking away from the pack.. thats my short .02 worth...

I'd put one on right now. I need the PN# Rob for the ZX11 sproket. I forgot how bad you made me look on the 4th gear roll on.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

Delivery seems very linear to Me on My zx02 , which makes it easy to ride. I had a yamaha rz500 once - now that had a 'power band'

I rarely use even 1/2 of the bikes potential but I like the feel of the latent power brimming & bubbling away.

The 02 and 01 are night and day ...Yes they are Brothers But one is Raised By wolves and the other is hmmm More civilized.....Tainui and I switched ....and the differences are enormous.......Higher ride height....Firmer front springs.....much more civilized at low rpms....and definitely slower to rev up the rpm ladder...powerband is like night and day......That was just my opinion of the 02 ...ask Tainui his opinion of my 01....and yes we have same mods.......Brian
