I was out riding today and noticed that each time i sat at a stop light, the cooling fan continually was coming on.. It was only 80 degrees today. Is this normal? Will this bike melt in 110 degree's in May?



Would that fan from Muzzy help at all?? Or is this simply how this bike runs... HOT??

What kind of riding were you doing.. Was it city riding or highway riding.. The 12R is one of the hottest running engines that I have ridden on. I recommend water wetter which is a solvent that is added to your coolant (BE CAREFUL READ DIRECTIONS). I to ride in weather around 65-80 year round and sometimes the fan comes on often when doing city riding. Get back to me on this one and I will see about helping you out. The water wetter is known to drop temp about 20-35 degrees..

Here in Dallas , this past summer was a killer.... even at night after riding on the highway for 20-30 mins, when we came off the exit ramp and stopped at the light, the gauge would creep

up, just short of " flashing " but man, did my legs cook.



Alien - any particular brand of water wetter ? Red line work well ?



Anyone add a larger cooling fan or man. over-ride switch?

Eman, Alien is right, get some Redline water wetter, it does help. Also when new, due to the very tight tolerances, the bike runs hot. It does get better as the miles increase. Hey, I'll be back in AZ this Friday, if you have anytime send me an email.

Redline Water Wetter is what I use, it is a must on the 12.



If you are in an area where it never freezes then you may want to dump your rad fluids and replace it with very minimal antifreeze (just to protect your system from rust), pure water and Redline Water Wetter will keep the temp down the best.



I have the Muzzy aluminum fan because I knew it wouldn't melt if I idled for awhile on a hot day, it is louder so I am not sure if it is moving more air, it is also lighter than the plastic fan with steel mounting collar.

Redline Water Wetter is good stuff, but if you're sitting still at a stoplight I don't think it's going to help you much! The cooling system on the 12R is only effective when you are MOVING!! Got to have good airflow through the radiator. Bottom line - the 12R ain't a good "big city bike". Riding in heavy traffic with lots of stops is a definite no-no on this bike!

I live in Puerto Rico where the usual temp. is 80 to 90 degrees. Since I installed the muzzy fan my fan runs for shorter periods of time. (it cools the bike quicker) But the temp still gets up there quick. I wish that the 12 was like the 7r that it does not go over a 1/4 on the temp gauge. But I think that is just a trade off for all the ponies and poor cooling system. I actually thought about dual fans and I'm currently working on it but just to try out.

I was doing a mixture of city and highway driving yesterday when this occured. I tend NOT to ride this bike in the city, and prefer highway trips, but then there are those few occassions that i ride it in the city. My concern is that once we get out of the "winter" here in Phx, that fan will ALWAYS be on!.



My ZRX ran warm, but nothing like this... has anyone created an after market dual-fan setup?





I am heading out for a 300 mile run today, I will report back how the temp did during the day.. It should be in the high 70's at my destination...

Just bring your bike out here already!!! The weather is prime for riding!!!!



I could use a riding partner.. The majority of people i ride with have 600's or 750's and cant do the long stretch's of mid triple digit speeds i do on various routes...



However, my friend just purchased a Busa.. once he get's it out of the shop, maybe he can ride it long enough to have some fun on it! LOL. He works at a HD dealership and someone traded in a 2k1 busa with pipes and PCII for a harley.. it only had 3k miles, but needs some work.. The starter was shot, the ignition was flakey and now we have to tune the PC...

I'm going to wire a switch inline with the fan switch like Richard did. I like the idea of being able to turn the fan on whenever I want but having it still come on by itself if it's getting hot

Don't know if you tried Water Wetter yet.

I was going to hard wire a fan switch in also on my V-Max, in addition to trying some Water Wetter from Redline. They can run very hot in traffic. I added the Water Wetter and have never once felt the need for the fan switch since---the stuff is unreal. That was two years ago---don't know how it will work on the 12 personally though---*yet*. I'm a believer in this stuff now. I gave some to my buddy and he's a believer too. One of the best products I've used as far doing what it says it will do.

Have any you with the Muzzy Aluminum fans noticed a rattle when they run, like they are rubbing a bit?



Mine has done it off and on since day one, I spoke to others last summer and they also had the problem.

I also had the temp sensor at the rad, go bad and i was going to hard wire a switch, But it seem's to run cooler the more mile's i put on it.



Being out Southwest i would put the wetter in and also consider running a switch in the loop. I would.

I agree with the mileage thing. After mine hit around 1800 miles, it started running alot cooler. Wrapping the header also helped cool things down.

Well, just put another 250 miles on the bike today.. have about 1300 now.



I am going to get rid of the Anti-freeze and run distilled water along with the Water Wetter. According to redline's web site, there is really no need for me to run anti-freeze for corrison protection, their product will do fine, and living in Phoenix, i dont need to worry about freezing temp's.. Just the opposite.. MELTING temp's!



I am going to be interested in seeing if the 2k2 ZX12 has the same radiator as the 00, maybe i can get the new fan assembly...

You might try a manual fan switch so that you can turn it on earlier may cool better. Its easy to do and if you temp sensor ever goes bad like mine did you flip the switch and ride home. I left it even after I fixed the sensor. Sitting in heavy traffic just turn on the fan when you want it on. Its as easy as connecting 2 wires......... May not work just an opinion.........

I haven't tried water wetter...I did wrap my header though. I would definatly recommend this! My bike used to run between 9 & 11 o'clock on a regular basis - after the header wrap I'm hard pressed to get it past the 9 o'clock and very rarely past 10 o'clock.

It's special wrap...looks like off-white cotton strips & has fiberglass? woven into it. I got mine at a local auto parts store. I got the 1" wide x 50ft & used 1 1/3 boxes (approx 70ft). Also, don't forget to buy the coating material...it's like a spraypaint.



Each box of wrap cost me about $28 + $10 for the spray = $68 total. I overlapped my wrap quite a bit...you may be able to get buy with only one box of 50ft. Or you could try the 2" stuff...
