I have the chance to purchase a 2000 ZX-12 (my dream bike), 16000 miles,no mods except chrome rims and frame sliders. Bike is a one owner and from the pictures I've seen is in immaculate condition. Can anyone give me any tips on things to look for when I go to see the bike first hand? Or problems associated with this year/model?

Check out the "stickys" at the top of the fourms for things to look out for.

Clutches aren't the strongest.

Probably about time for a valve adjustment unless they can prove it was done at a specific date/mileage. May as well throw in new plugs while you're there. And while you're there may as well ditch the KLEEN system and get block off plates.

Most bikes lose 2nd gear first. 3rd and 4th were popping out on mine when the trans was stock.

Sounds like you need to bring an experienced rider or mechanic with you. You seem head over heals for it and may overlook glaringly obvious problems. Should be at least on its 2nd set of tires, maybe 4th depending on it was ridden.

If you do get it, enjoy it stock for a while. Occaisionally I do miss the quite stock sound of a stone stocker. Catch people sleeping if you debadge it....even more if you rebadge it zx6r or zx9r.

I've heard about the clutches too, but mainly from dragstrip guys.
It's a bike well worth owning, even if you do have to buy a new clutch.

Thanks for the tips guys. I went to see the bike in person last week. I took some pics of it and the paint or frame doesnt show any sign of being laid down or wrecked. Cranks up instantly cold and doesnt have any wierd noises. I was disappointed that one of the two previous owners cut off the ram air scoop!! That is one of my favorite parts of the 12! Any way I'm going back this friday with a friend who races and let him test drive it for me. Depending on his recomendation I may buy it. So I have two questions...

1. I cant seem to find a ram air scoop ANYWHERE, I would like to replace it if I buy it.. (maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places)
2. I saw a 2006 ZX-10 there that also caught my eye....Any tips on the ZX110?

congrats on your new purchase. btw i have the drilled inner clutch hub and puller with reduced shank for improved oiling of the clutch. that was a problem on the "A" models.

Congrats and welcome Nate.

I'm not sure, but I think the only way to post pics is to remote link to them someplace on the internet. That is to say that they need to be hosted somewhere on the web (such as photobucket.com, shutterfly.com etc.) and then you have to link to the address for that photo inside of the requisite html commands (ie. click the little icon with the mountains/sun in it then place your picture's web address between the prompts).

Hope that helps.

Brought her home to day,..nice 30 mile ride from the dealer to get to KNOW her a little better. The dealer gave me some brake pads that they were planning to put on the front because he said when he rode it he felt a slight pulsing in the front brake. I noticed it also. I'm not a trained mechanic (I do tturn a wrench or two) but I do know a pulsing brake maybe ROTORS and not just pads. Am I correct?,....I've done brakes on several cars before,..how much more labor intensive is changing the pads on the 2000?
