Pulled the engine to check the valve cleances. Have to adjust a few of them. No big deal. Just wanted to share some pics with you guys.

For those who don't know what a "shim under bucket" valve setup is...this is a shim.

Notice the number 45 stamped on it. That's what you use (along with a dial caliper) to determine what the shim thickness is.

This is the "bucket"

The valve

The valve with the shim in place

and finally the bucket over the valve and shim

Eric did you already reassemble? I 'd be curious to know what things to watch for with cam removal, my 88 ZX-10 never required cam removal, had rockers on spring followers, made valve adjustments a snap. IYHO, is there really enough room to do the valve adjustments, without dropping the motor? oh yeah more pics would be great!

Since it's going on the site, if it's not too much trouble I would like to see

sort of a "How to" documentation. I'll be doing my own next winter and it

would be very helpful to have something to refer to. Thank's Eric.

Sorry guys have been working a lot. Keeping me off the boards.

Sleepr, haven’t put it back together yet. Just got the needed shims that I need to make my adjustments today.

Should go back together by this weekend.

I would say there is enough room to check the valves with the motor in there. I don't know about making any changes. I am very anal about my stuff and like to have everything perfect. The best way to do the best job in my opinion is to go ahead and pull the motor. If you are mechanically inclined, it's easy. Hardest part was getting the front sprocket off. It's supposed to be at 98 ft/lbs and I swear it was on at about 150 ft/lbs from the factory .

Blitz, as I said before, I'm very anal I clean my hands before I get into the engine. The only place I got "dirty" was when messing with the chain and front sprocket.

Topendrush, I checked the valves when the bike was stock at about 7500 miles. At about 9000 miles I installed Akro, PCIIIR, and K&N's. I'm at about 11800 miles and decided I wanted to check things out now that it’s had some miles on the "new" setup. Valves were all in spec @ 7500 miles. I now have 2 valves that are out of spec (too tight). Since I've got things torn down, I'm adjusting all valves to be on the "loose" end of the spec.

Silver, as stated above, now at about 11,800 miles. I've heard everything from check them at 1000 miles then 15000 miles to check them at 7500, 15000, then not worry about them. I just checked them at 7,500 because I had nothing better to do . High performance engines require high performance maintenance. To each their own but I like to make sure I'm getting maximum hp and performance. At 9,000 miles with the Akro and PCIIIR I pulled 171 hp when it was 96 degree's with 90 % humidity (after getting a custom map made the same day). When I get the valves done, I'm going to get it run again and see if there is any difference.

Wardawg, Not really a lot of work. It is actually therapeutic for me Working with computers all day it's nice to be able to come home and take something apart and put it back together. Very constructive

Hey Killer, long time no comms. Shim size changed on almost all 16 valves. They didn't all need it, but I wanted to put all valves at about the same clearance and just on the loose side of the speced range. running mostly 60's on the intake and 45's on the exhaust.

My foot is never going to be as fast as that damn air shifter...but it will be fun none the less

Hopefully this summer we can get together more with Alan and do more ridding. My year looks pretty bleak untill after June
