My 00 has a surge in it when holding a steady rpm.Took it to the dealer and left it for a week. They called Kawasaki and they sent them some stuff to check.Went and picked it up and they said they couldn't find anything wrong but they adjusted a fuel sencer.Surge is still there.Anybody know what could be causing this.

My red '00 does the same thing, especially around 3000 rpms.I got the "high alt." ecu swap, seemed better for a while, but it still does it.It's lots worse when hot/humid out.It runs great therwise,so I just live with it. I wonder if my new Akra and pc will take care of it?Also,it seemed like the bike lost some of it's "hit" powerwise after the swap, but I may have just been getting used to all that power. It was quite a step up from an FJ12!

Run some Techron through it to clean the injectors real good. Don't know if it will resolve it, but if it doesn't you can rule that out.

Hoss, I know its hard to believe but thats just the way the '00/'01 are!!! What pipe do you have or are you stock???...Just raise the idle to 1300-1500rpm...The surge is nothing, wait till you put on a PC3r and get the 2500rpm stumble!!!...You learn to live with it!!!

Like Blitz said, put in the Techron once a year and the F.I. system will be fine!!!

The '02 ZX12 is alot smoother!!!...Especially with the Akrapovic pipe!!!

Thanks for the info will give it a try.It was a left over 00 I got it around 4 months ago.It has around 4000 miles on it.Still running stock pipe. The surge is between 4000 and 5000 rpms.
Will a new pipe take care of this.Still under warranty btw

I thought you were talking about the idle surge!!!...Yes there is a 2500 and 4000-5000rpm stumbles!!!...I recommend the Akrapovic Stainless pipe, PC3r, Muzzy blockoffs, K-Ns or BMC air filters...Download HarryZX12s Akrapovic map from the map archive and you will be alot smoother then my Red 2000 with the Muzzy pipe!!!

The "old" standard test for leaness on bike consists of:

1. properly adjusted chain.
2. steady throttle hand.
3. long, long straight
4. start in first gear (as it will be most pronounced in the lowest gear if there is leaness) and hold a steady 2000 rpms for 15 seconds. The go to 3000 rpm for 15 seconds, 4000 rpm for 15 seconds, etc. till you find the "surge". If it bucks or surges at any particular rpm, your probably lean at that rpm.

Motors run in this manner will show lean spots if you one is present. Dont try it an any gear above third.....you'll never feel the surge. If you can feel it in fourth or fifth or sixth (god forbid), you got some problems. I would then start looking for some fuel starvation problems and not simply "jetting" concerns.

Harrys map with the blockoffs, Kleen air removed, K-Ns, Akrapovic produced a 181 HorsePower @ RearWheel...I witnessed that myself at the 1st. Annual DealsGap ZX12r get together!!!...He won the HorsePower shootout...ZX12Girl was second with 178HP Akrapovic and Harrys Map no K-Ns...Redelk was 3rd Muzzy with same mods 176HP dont know what map he had...

Wow!!! Not to shabby.I had Doug from Spencer Cycle load me a custom map he offered, since I was asking him all kinds of "newbie" questions about how to program them.Heck of a nice guy.Hope my set-up runs like that one!

Hoss,

the "surge" you are feeling is normal for the 00 stock bike. I have the exact same bike that you have described, and the same "surge" at around 5000. Either give more throttle, or shift.

Hoss,
I agree with Quickwilly, I also have a 2000. The surge at 5 grand is normal. You will eventually get used to it. I installed a muzzy slip on and the surge went away, of course I now have idle hunt but that is another issue. Once I got rid of the surge I felt a lot more confident around the corners.
