my friends,
In past posts i have read about the warning of "birds"a.k.a uzzards, on the road.I never realized just how deadly these ugly fat disgusting eating road kill birds can be.
It was a usuall sunday ride in sunny s.fla today, out in our typical flat straight country roads.loaded with annoying flying
insects and sculking buzzards.Thank god today was not a over-crowded ride.6 bikes including myself.r6,r1,gx1k,900r,and
1 gx750.
We were on our way home & were out in the boonies.i was the lead bike.we were about to hit our last real long straightaway, and i decided to open her up a bit before going back into the city and into radarville.i climbed to about 150 or so and the pack followed at a safe distance back.thank god we had all experienced riders and no squids in the pack. i started to slow her down & just than i see a big mess up ahead in the road in my lane approaching fast.i start gettin on the brakes not knowing yet what lies up ahead.
finally i approach at the slowest speed i could.this all happened so fast, their was not much more i could do.
i finally get real close and their sits in the middle of the road the biggest ugliest buzzard i have ever seen in my life.
The big dumb feather brain was so busy munching on his road kill he didnt see me comin till it was too late.
I saw big wings start flapping when he finally saw me & at that point i'm hard on the brakes.i'm thinkin w.t.f do i do?
i didnt want to go down of course, and i especially didnt want to make any riders behind start a crash chain reaction.
fatso is steady flopping his wings trying to get airborne, but his weight and his full belly were causing him a very slow skyward shot.finally he gets some altitude, and i made my decision to go to the right hard and if i wreck i wreck,i didnt want others getting hurt if i just ran the ********* over.
as soon as i cut it right birdbrain dosnt fly straight up in the air,his dumbass goes up and also to the right.oh shit i'm thinking i'm dead.i got my speed down to about 60 or so and the collision occured.WHACK!!!!.Bird slams into my front smoked zero gravity windshield and my rg.side stock "01" mirror.(Those big ugly mirrors saved my life!).the mirror took most of the impact and swung back against my fairing up top and took the biggest hit.crack!fairing was toast.
We all stop.i'm shaking like a leaf and at that point could not ride for a while.we get off the bikes and start estimating the damage.broken windshield, some how his beak or foot scratched my mirror up front on the black side, and broke it.the mirror hit the fairing up top so hard it actually broke my fairing and the bar the mirror is bolted to actually BENT!.i couldnt believe this.all from a buzzard.that bar the mirror bolts to is one hefty bar,and it bent.we tried to straighten out the bar and could hardly move it.so i'm sayin just at that speed and the impact of the bird doing that much damage amazed me.(i'm guessing $500.00 in damages).i wrote this post hoping any rider out there will be careful of those nasty creatures.
their slow taking off and very stupid.we all love playing around on our z's with our buddy's on a nice sunday day,
take it from me if you see a buzzard in the road,DO NOT ASSUME he will fly outa the way,cuz chances are he will not.i got very lucky today and thank god nobody was injured, just from a hobby we all love.watch those buzzards fella's!

Mach, that sucks dude!!!...Glad that it wasnt worse!!!

I have a little story myself, never posted it but your story is similar, so here it is!!!

Just going for a night ride around the strip, my friend on a gixxer 1000 and I went on a road that has few traffic lights, long, with little curves...We pull up to a red light and sitting there, I get into DragRacing possition set the throttle at 3500rpm light turns green and we go, 1st, 2nd and I see an animal crossing the street about 100ft. ahead of me I stay straight and in the throttle hoping that the little animal the size of a fat cat gets scared and turns back...Nope, no chance of that, he continues and I run him over, just a little thump!!!...I said wheeew!!! Was hoping I wasnt going down, I go back to see what it was and it was a Racoon!!!...He was in bad shape and strugling to move across the grass divider, I guess he wanted to continue across the street...Poor little guy!!!..I had his fur in the bottom fairing too!!!...No damage to the bike...

Sounds like you were thinking the whole time and did all that was humanly possible for the circumstances you did alright.
One time back in the Z1 days we used to ride at night in the summer cause its so hot during the day here in Tx. Anyway three of us are out on the highway running about 90mph and topped a hill and there was five armadillos out in the road at various places in the lanes. I couldnt stop no way and just kinda zig zagged and ran over one of the dillos tails. Everyone else also missed them but it was a miracle. Ive hit one in the car before and its like hitting a cement block. That scared me bad.

poor racoon. crotch,..those dont fly and are a lil easier to manuver around, but still their there and ya gotta do your best. i ran one over with my car once and my girlfriend at the time insisted i go back and bury it!.(we broke up shortly after that request) I'm still recovering from this today,if that blob would have hit me in the helmet it could have broken my neck, shit it bent that strong mirror bar! I think every rider at one time or another has to do what he has to from going up against natures creatures of the road.I myself really had no clue buzzards were that stupid and slow.i hope someone learns from my mistake if they see a big turkey in the road, of course thats what this board is for.whether it be info on bike perf.,mods,etc..shop talk,or just reading posts and learning from other peoples actions.
I STILL HATE F...n ugly ass buzzards the most<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">

That same thing happened to a friend of mine while we were riding. But, he was on a Honda CB500 and he hit the buzzard at about 90 mph. It did over $500 damage to a bike that cost $900 new! That splattered buzzard smelled so bad, my friend puked in his full face helmet. It even punctured his tank.

Not just a barbarian, a great barbarian!

Sorry to hear about that but you are ok... Just watch out next time going down there for the dumb buzzard eating the other dumb buzzard you took out!

THIS IS A NO BULLSHIT STORY.WAS OUT RIDING MY 12R LAST YEAR AND WAS ON A STRAIGHT STRETCH DOING AROUND 160 KILOMETERS PER HOUR WHEN A BIRD , ABOUT THE SIZE OF A ROBIN TRIED TO CROSS IN FRONT OF ME.HE DIDN'T QUITE MAKE IT AS HE CONNECTED WITH MY FRONT BRAKE LEVER.THE FORCE WAS ENOUGHT TO APPLY EXTREME PRESSURE TO THE FRONT BRAKE BREIFLY MAKING FOR AN EXCITING MOMENT.DIDN,T DO ANY DAMAGE TO THE BIKE BUT MADE A HELL OF A MESS.YOU'VE GOT TO WATCH FOR THE LITTLE SUCKERS AS WELL.

j/k

I've caught my share of low flying birds on high speed runs
but most of them have superior turning capibilities at the last second... except one.
