Hi, I'm new to this board and thought that I would introduce myself and ask for some feedback.

I've been riding sport bikes on and off since I was 18 (30 now) with my last one being a GSXR 750. I'm a big dude (6'5" and 275lbs). I’m no knee dragger but I like to go fast. Drag racing is in my blood so acceleration is very important. My Dad and Uncle run a Kawasaki NHRA Pro Stock Drag Bike.

I know that I’m just asking for trouble asking this on a ZX-12 board…

Well my question is on how to compare the ZX-12R to the GSXRs that I have had. I'm planning to buy a new bike this summer and am pretty well narrowed to down to the ZX-12R and the GXSR 1000.

The way I see it...

ZX-12R
---Pros---
POWER
Comfort (comparatively)
More unique (I see a million GSXRs, R1s, & CBRs)

---Cons---
Weight (~550 wet vs. ~430 wet)
Handling (comparatively)

GSXR 1000
---Pros---
Power (not as much as the ZX)
Weight (~430 wet vs. ~550 wet)
Handling

---Cons---
Comfort (comparatively)
Common (I see a million GSXRs, R1s, & CBRs)

What do you think???

If your looking for all out acceleration and speed, you're not going to beat the 12. Especially if you're a big dude. Your gonna need the extra tourqe, ponies and room. I'm 6'2, 225ibs and i feel cramped on the R1 , don't know bout the GSXR1k but I assume they are damn similar. 12s running in the 9's with little or no mods with competent riders. Don't get me wrong, teh GSXR1K is a fast bike, but the 12 is king. And if your worried bout the twisties, you can catch em in the straight aways, not that you're gonna be that far behind anyway!

Juggernaut - Welcome to the board.

You answered all your own questions in your statements.

You want the 12 and the 12 is the right bike, especially for your size.

Here's is my brief review ....
We worked out a demo ride on this bike, and I went there really wanting to like it. So, a few weeks back I rode a 2003 Gixxer 1000.
I really loved the look it has. But that was about all it can do for me.
I found it to be uncomfortable compared to my 12.
No where near my 178 r.w.h.p.
I felt cramped and I'm only 5'8" @ 220 lbs.

A skilled rider may have an advantage on the 1K in the really tight stuff,
but I would be very close on the PMB.
On a straight away...no contest. Remember we are talking real world here, not magazine article racing.

Roll ons... no contest, the 1K has no where near the low or mid range of the 12. ( Maybe with better gearing, it would be ok )

If you keep the 1K in the very upper rpms it's a runner..

If you keep the 12 in the upper rpms its a missle.

The 12 wins hands down in my book.

And that is my complete unbiased opinion

I really wanted to like the 1K, but it ain't no Zedex 12

Any questions?

Thanks for the feedback...I was (and still am) pretty solid on going to the ZX-12.

Mark, what does PMB stand for? I keep seeing that abbreviation.

Juggernaut,

PMB is the main color of my 2002

Pearl Mystic Black

the secondary color is of course Cressant (sp?) Gold

some call the 2003 a PMB thinking it is a Pearl Mystic Burgandy,
but it is actually Cosmic Splendor Red

My opinion.... unless you plan on doing some road coarse track days, there is no doubt you are looking for a 12R. Major gains in power with just a pipe, and you would be hard pressed to find a better all around street abuser. I have laid waste to R1's and gixxers alike in the corners on the street, so don't let the weight fool you. Last night I ran away from a guy on an 03 R1 in the twisties..... and I had my wife on the back! No, I'm not kidding (she's patient with me). On the road coarse, you would definitely want the gixxer.... but since my time at the track (none so far) is not nearly as much time as I have on the street, the 12 is all I need. Nevermind the comfort over the gixxer.

At the strip the 12R works wonders as well. I am not a huge drag racer, but I have made a handfull of passes in my day. My third attempt on the 12 I ran a 10:38 at 138, and my bike is completely stock with no lowering or straps. Ride it in, make a couple passes and ride it home. I know I can improve on that as well since I missed a shift point and didn;t get behind the windshield enough. All said and done.... the 12R is without a doubt the best bang for the buck. I LOVE THIS THING!

Yeah, for big dudes like us,!2's rule.
Just watch for little guys on Gixxer's,they're very fast. You'll use every bit of the 12's power runnin' 'em down if they get a jump on ya
Soon as my R title 12 is back in action,I may look into a little "extra" propulsion from from teeny blue bottle................

If you're talking about comparing a showroom stock 2003 GSXR1000 vs. 2003 ZX12R then I would have to vote for the 1000. It's quicker, lighter, and with the same rider will smoke a 12R in the 1/4 mile and on the roadcourse. It's not until you start modding the 12R that it comes to life, and even then it will only out-perform the 1000 in top-end speed in a straight line. The 12R gets my vote for daily rider, but for performance (racing) the 1000 wins hands down.

Boy, they are both great bikes. But the ergos on the Suzook are just to aggressive for my beatup old wrists; I don't think I would last more than an hour on one without some serious aching.

Here in Los Angeles, where twisties are almost non-existant and with miles of freeways, the ZX12R reigns king, in my book, for eating up the never-ending concrete.

with your size, the 12 would be the obvious choice, as far as the twisties are concerned...well that comes down to the rider 9/10 times.

I have a 2003 ZX-12R (fast, not too uncomfortable, good handling) and a 2002 ZRX1200R (pretty fast, VERY comfortable, pretty good handling) and I love them both but if I were to buy a third bike it would be the 2003 GSXR1000 (fast, uncomfortable, great handling).

It's going to be interesting this fall when the ZX-10R, CBR1000RR, and the revamped YZF-R1 debut.

I looked long and hard at 3 bikes before I decided on the zx12 and one of them was the 1000gixxer the other a hayabugly...The 1000 is a bad bitch but very unpractical for everyday riding. you don't see many 1000's at the drags and there a good reason for that, they are way to short for a good launch in stock form and all those articles ya read are full of crap when they say a 12 cant handle,...Sure it may not corner like a 1000 but then nothing else can and when the roads straighten out the mighty 12 is gonna real in that 1000...just make sure ya get the green one.
