ok i just bought a zx9r 98 model about two weeks ago and it makes a ticking noise towards the head area. its not very loud but bein scared of a bike thats new to me, im worried about it. im thinking that the valve clearance just needs checked but i have never really worked on a sportbike. it runs good and starts easy but im just scared im going to damage the motor. please give me opinions on this.

oh yea the bike has 23k miles on it so im thinking its just valve clearance, well im hoping so anyway.

the motor is very noisy any way so you'll hear valve noise all the time but if its more than normal do the valve clearance check there is a write up of how do do it ,pm me your email and i'll get it to you

Hey, not sure how far away you are from our shop RnR Cycles, we're in Sterling, VA minutes from Dulles Airport. Rick has been raced the ZX-7R and 9R extensively, now he's onto the 636 while I'm on the 12R.

Rick still rides an 00 9R as his streetbike, his G/F has the 98 9R...

the 98 doesn't do too bad:




If you want you can call the service line and ask for Rick (571)277-0892. If you can get the bike to us he can listen to it in the parking lot no charge. Could be valves, could be CCT, I'm not sure until it gets here.

hey about the cbr954 video. is the zx9r really faster then the 954 cuz my brother has a 954 and hes always giving me crap about mine being carbed but we raced a few days ago from a start of about 40mph and i took the lead from the start and never seen him again. we did this three times cuz the first time he said he missed second gear, but who knows if he really did. i know i wouldnt want a carbed bike that was four years older beating up on my 954.

the 954 has a leo vince slip on and a 520 chain.

the zx9r has a micron slip on and thats it. im looking into gettin a 520 chain set up but damn then i would really smoke him.lol.

im a little more then a seven hour drive away. i think i need to get a shim library and go ahead and reshim the valves. it got i lil more then 23k on it so is there anything else i might want to check out while i have the head tore down?

7 hours? You're in VA....right?!

That was a 929, not 954 although they are quiet similar. 929/954, while being larger displacement motors and lighter in weight may not have the aero advantage and DEFINATELY don't have the cams or RAM AIR.

On a stock geared 929 with a slip-on, no mirrors it went 169 on GPS.

On the 98 ZX-9R stock geared with a slip-on I've gone 168.7. Sounds the same, right?

But the 9R slams into the rev limiter hard and early, the Honda waaanes past peak power with its softer cams.

I dropped a tooth and the 9R still went faster....the Honda as it sat probably wouldn't have.

Exhaust Leak

My 2000 ZX-9R had the exact same problem. Ticking noises from around the cylinder head area. The ticking noise sounded exactly like a bad hydraulic lifter in a small block chevy.

Turns out, when the shop put on my Muzzy exhaust they didn't use any exhaust gaskets. I bought four of the factory copper gaskets from my local Kawasaki dealer and installed them. No more ticking.

What else didn't they do right, forgot to tighten the bolts between the front wheel and forks? "Hey sorry man, we'll get it right one of these times." douche bags!

I think that also increases the possibility of burned exhaust valves. Glad you got it straightened out right and for posting up your find. Good for future reference. :thumbup:

Ticking could be injectors?
Ticking could be that exhaust gasket as mentioned.
Ticking could be tight valves with the loosest setting will make that baby a lot quieter.
Ticking could be the piston skirt slap that lost tolerance is when you set the valves to spec or loose spec, the tick is still there = OUCH!

Got a video of the noise?
