cracking or clunking noise under hard acceleration

Hello everyone,

I took my bike out to try to learn how to do power wheelies, when I snapped the throttle back there was a loud clunk noise, (CLACK!) I chopped the throttle because it startled me. I tried again and same thing happened I went to the kawi dealer to get it diagnosed and got on the waiting list. Thought I would try again but not chop the throttle and see if I can get her prowling at the sky but when I did I felt and heard a "CLACK. CLACK-CLACK-CLACK" noise. Because it didn't subside after the first I again chopped the throttle and no wheelie. =(
Some threads have similar symptoms and are clutch problems. I'm leaning that way, what do you guys think?
I have never done clutch work before should I leave it to the pros?
I've been putting a lot of money in my 12 lately and I love it but I wonder if I shouldn't just go by a new 10.

thank you!

Check your clutch basket for cracks and check the springs in the base of the basket. The springs get crushed and allow additional play in teh basket, which gives a loud clunking sound when going from decel to acceleration.

Yep. 2 main things come to mind here are chain and clutch under hard acceleration.

Thank you for the help, I have an appointment with the dealer 3 weeks from now I am considering taking it off and looking myself and then depending on how that goes ordering replacement parts.
I can't decide if I should attempt the work myself, and if its safe to ride in the mean time...

Thank you!

one other thing it may be is if it is limited to one gear it could be slipping out of gear under hard torque load.like the side dogs are wore (or scockets) just keep that in mind...

I was thinking dogs also. I never had a bike tranny apart , but have done hundreds of car trannys. . Every manual trans I have ever repaired wouldnt intermittantly "slip" with a bad spot in a gear. I could see how a clutch could do it but mine sweems only to be in second gear. looks like the gears are stright cut in service manual so I bet its the dogs ...will ride this summer and dissamble over winter...I want to ride it some. guess the drag strip is out...Bill

second gear is the gear i hear most talk about. my zx11 ate second that way. tripples we would loose 1st under power before anyone (the tranny with N on the bottom. never rode a newer tripple we collected 72s i am not sure if they ever went to 1down 4 up.

4th gear - tooth missing

.

I have just rebuilt the gearbox on my 12, after I noticed a 'sudden' noise in 4th gear. Have a look at these photo's http://www.drpmds.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/My%20Bikes.htm
There was wear on the sides of both 'dogs' changing up into 4th and changing down into 4th gear.
I was lucky the gearbox didn't explode and wreak my engine.
I replaced the complete gear train, selector mechanism and drum. And also replaced the gear lever pushrod ball cups for rose joints, a bit of engineering but the shift is now nice and tight.
I've only ridden once since rebuild, but all seems good.
I will put video link of the 'clunking' next week.

R&D Motorsports does the best trans work period. 8) my shift forks were bent/worn and it allowed second gear to pop in and out, metal chunks all thru the motor. did a complete tear down and have new bearings, pump rotor ect ect ect. plus the works from R&D. back cut, drum mod, HD clips, billet 1-4....
