Sitting at a light on the way home the engine just dies (wasn't too hot or anything). Doesn't restart. Check fluids, etc. OK. Finally start it with throttle at quarter throttle with engine sounding like it's missing a cylinder and after ten seconds or so the FI light comes on, all the while it spews a fine gasoline mist out the exhaust. Got plenty of exercise getting it home and I haven't checked the code yet, but it sure feels like something electrical on one cylinder like a harness wire or coil or something. Figures that this would occur two weeks out of warranty. Guess it's just as well it was almost time to have the valves checked anyway. So why does this only happen to the silver ones?

Make sure none of the Fuel Injector harnesses came loose.

If it will help, send me your codes, I have a manual and can look them up for you.

Sounds to me like you have an injector out to lunch.

Only has ten thousand miles on it. I can't believe a spark plug or wire would just go south in an instant (was running great just before it died at idle after about a minute at a light), and I've got a Yosh box in line with the ECU that thinks everything is fine, so I'm assuming a chaffed wire or one of those stick coils, but I suppose it could just as well be an injector spewing WAY too much gas in one cylinder. I'll post what it turned out to be in the next week or so once it works again.

Thanks for the offer, but I've got a manual... I'm just too tired and pissed right now to bother with it.

Time will tell, but I don't think you have a plug/firing problem, I think you have an injector problem.......

Gonna let the dealer handle it?

Yup probably will get it to the dealer after I check all the harnesses and the simple stuff. The manual says that if the FI system detects an open injector it will shut it down, but maybe it locked and didn't register an open voltage. At least I got to ride today (70F in Dallas).

Well the bike just fixed itself. A couple days after being stranded it just fired right up. I dropped the bike off at the dealership anyway since it was long past time for the 7500 mile checkup. The code turned out to be a 42 (Fuel injector #2). I dunno how it fixed itself. The dealership said they mucked with the harnesses etc. trying to reproduce the problem and it never did. By the way, they wrote down all the clearances on the shims, and none needed changing (I've got around 10k miles). Maybe I should replace the injector even though it's currently working before I install the nitrous?

Every season you should put in 1 container of Chevron- Techtron fuel injector cleaner...Alot of the race guys recomend it...

Put it into a full tank, then when it gets to half, fill up again!!! I havent had any problems with the injectors yet...I have 9,400 miles...

I use it occasionally, but I have a wee bit of a hard time believing the injector was gummed up... I think Blitzkrieg was right that the injector just was out to lunch. With enhanced performance cars I know you have to be careful not to run too high of a duty cycle or the injector can just lock up, but I didn't think the ZX-12 ran that long of a spray cycle for that to be a risk.

Recommendation: If you haven't already, clean the fuel filter. At 10k it's way overdue if you haven't already done it.

All it takes is one gas station running their tanks a little low and swirling up a bunch of sediment, and poof, you have a situation.

The hardest thing I had to get used to was how much more sensitive FI is compared to carbs.....
