Skips resurrection build thread

I have enough projects on the go but picked up one more yesterday. I bought it with the intention of fixing it up and making a quick buck, but now I feel undecided on what direction to take. I found this on Kijiji (our version of Craigslist ) for $1000. It appears to be a reg/rec issue that these bikes were known for. Which is why I always cut and solder the stator wires to stop the oil from getting to the plug on my bikes and my friends 12s. The bike caught on fire while being driven and obviously hasn't ran since. That was about 8 years ago. The owner started getting a few parts to fix it but suddenly became sick from cancer and it sadly took his life. His nickname was Skip so i will carry on the name with his bike. Skip liked to do power wheelies past muscle cars on the highway and do the odd top speed blast at Perry sound. His best was a 310 (approx 193mph) which is very respectable for a mostly bike with stock headers. He was also known for beating up on hayabusas that he found on the highway. The bike has been at skips cousins since the fire and he was happy to see it go to someone that could fix it back up and appreciate it, but very sad to see a connection to his lifelong buddy get taken away. He's requested that I keep him updated on the progress. If this bike is sold I feel like it should go to a person that will take care of it and use it for it's intended purpose. (Beating up on hayabusas)
I am worried that the motor may be rusty inside from sitting, but pulling the oil fill cap looks promising. A bit of green oil trapped by the o ring and threads and a familiar smell makes me believe it has motul 300v in the sump. That stuff sticks to parts very well so I'm hopeful it's all good.
The gas tank is about half full and only shows a bit of rust just under the cap. The fuel lines are badly damaged but I don't think they were leaking during the fire.
The subframe is warped and partially melted away. I'm undecided if I should repair it or replace it.
I'm going to give the bike a clean up and remove the damaged parts. It may possibly be a runner with just a rear harness, ecu and battery

this was our little road trip. the GF, Diesel and I left at 4am and got back a little after midnight. a mostly clear drive with some snow for the last hr or so which made unloading a bit stressful, but its safe inside now.

Looks like an honourable project you've taken on Scott! This really emphasises the issue with the stator/reg connector.

I noticed it's got throttlemeisters on too. And those forks certainly are raised through the triple clamps!!

Good luck with the build, will be good to watch.

its also lowered in the rear with adjustable links. i think i will put it back to stock height. I may or may not keep the helibars on it. the bike came with some spare parts, which included the stock bars, oem brake lines etc. Also have a paper manual, and a silverbook with it.
i stripped the bike today of its plastics, harness, gas tank etc. gave it a bit of a wash, and to my surprise the fuel lines look ok, they were just covered in fire extinguisher crud. I will likely replace them anyway for peace of mind. i layed a donor harness and ecu on the bike, swapped the battery and put some penetrating oil and a couple ccs of 2 stroke oil down the intake ports. spun the motor over several times and let it sit while i had supper. next i gave it a few more spins and saw that the oil light was going out almost immediately each time so i knew the pump was working and not air locked, with the oiling system primed i then gave it a bit of brake clean in the intake and it fired up on it. sounds fine, but i didnt let it run long inside. the next test will be on the fuel system to see if its still in working order and then to route the harness properly on the bike.

it still has factory air filters which i will swap for a set of greased up K&Ns. i can also see the cat still in the pipe so i will take that out and install an o2 bung to see how its running. I also want to test some new flashing capabilities that are close to being finished.

Going to name the bike Skip to carry on the nick name of the previous owner.

I ordered a subframe from eBay today to replace the melted one. Looks like it has the plastic tray I need by the shock and even the barro sensor. Not bad for 74 shipped.

so the fuel system appears to have mostly survived its long nap. theres a little rust, but overall its in great shape considering what its been through. it also runs fine on the old gas lol. I have the stock air filters pulled out and a used set of K&Ns installed with a good coating of grease on the sides. the stator is only hooked up temporarily while i find a proper connector, but the rest of the harness is being tucked in place now. had to unpin and repin the big white plug that goes into the battery box to make it fit through with the motor in place. next up is changing out the melted left hand controls for a spare set.

Btw, that clutch lever/perch looks different to normal?? Does it have an adjuster on it?

Looks like one from a zx-9r C model, adjustable, like the one I put on my B4.

For Tech Questions Bike Model letters and Country are more useful than saying the year, for UK owners anyway, as registration year is not always the year of manufacturer model.

Ah, looks like I stuffed up! Thought Steve was referring to the clutch pull arm down at the clutch cover....
