18000miles or 24000km Service

Greetings ladies and jellyspoons,

Quick question I have 2000km to go to the first 24000km/18000mile service... how important is this as I am due to go on a bike tour of around 5000km's in 2 weeks... would she be good for me to do this and then service it afterwards or would it be better to get it done now? As unfortunately I may not be able to get her into the mechanics as most of the ones I trust are busy at present to the point one said it would be 3 weeks to get the service done... and unfortunately I am not that mechanically minded especially as I have done the valve clearance work on any bike before...

Fresh oil and filter...air in the tires...no leaks....and ride the rubber off the rims.
Imo.

I'd add a new radiator cap to that list, as a "just incase" item
Dont want to be 2500km from home and it lets the coolant out of the radiator!

Is that a weak spot on this bike? I donít think mine has ever been replaced yet..

Unless the bike is making funny noises you should be okay with new oil and filter. Check if your chain has the right slack too. Should be about 2 fingers moving it up and down. Measure it roughly in the middle between front and rear sprocket.
And as said. Check tyres be sure they have profile left for the trip, otherwise replace as you can always put them back on when youíre back home again to burn them up.

Radiator caps on any vehicle should be checked, they're a serviceable item..
I've needed to change mine twice in 8 years

Must admit more worried about the valve clearances... is it okay to leave them for a couple of thousand more or so?

I would say so. I had a concern like this once on my KLR and the dealer said if you don't hear anything unusual it is ok to let it go.
