Overheating

Hello
I am reaching out seeking advice on what can possibly be a significant overheating problem. Made one week ago my purchase and entrance to kawa world with 300km straight on a drive way with 5 stops because of the overheating indicator kept flashing on the ZX12r. Now I’ve got a problem. The bike is going to make the 25k service stop but this overheating issue could turn into a severe damage on the motor. I saw brown liquid after the road trip when I finally stopped the bike. This was an extraordinary road test with 45’C outside temperature. The ventilation was acting and the electric seems to be ok. Could this be a bad bleeding refrigeration issue or a deeper one? Please advise

Actually the advertising years ago with the porshe leaking turned out to be the contrary

Yes you did the right thing by stopping when the LED starts flashing. Did the cooling fan come ON? because it should of. If not, then take the plug off the radiator fan switch and short the 2 contacts in the loom plug together, the fan should come on even without the ignition switched on. If it does not come on, then check the Fan fuse/s in the Fuse/junction box. If the fuses are ok then there is a problem to the radiator fan switch.

Where from?

For Tech Questions Bike Model letters and Country are more useful than saying the year, for UK owners anyway, as registration year is not always the year of manufacturer model.

Hi, from sunny Portugal. The issue is that after the 5th stop I rode about 45KM without stopping and warned me 2x times. I am affraid it can be a motorhead issue. The bike besides peed herself, it look liked a popcorn machine internally.

Maybe I've override it too much. The goal was to get safe and with the bike 100%. Not only resulted in fail, i've got today also a ticket in my mailbox for speed limit excess for 260kmh on the drive way...a great start in the kawa

Had the same prob on my 02 12r .I checked all the obvious,hoses, clamps,blocked rad+rad cap no joy.Do u have blowback into your reserve tank or a loss of coolant .i did the problem was a bastard to trace .It turned out to be a pin prick hole in the small connection hose from the water pump to the engine .The problem in tracing the fault was when the engine is running & up to temp the coolant was escaping as steam & when the engine was switched of the hose was no longer under pressure ergo no sign of a leak .Fixed the prob with a rad hose cut to fit from a ford .While your at it fit a thormo override switch cheap & useful.PS if u are losing coolant pressure from anywhere in the system u will overheat Ride Safe

Sounds like rusty coolant ?, I would drain and completly flush her through with a hose pipe and refill with some decent coolant, check radiator for damaged fins etc.
Check thermostate hasn't failed ?, did the coolant come from the expansion bottle ?

Another thought check you radiator cap, if this isn't working your cooling system won't work efficiently, also take cap off and run engine to see if any bubbles or smoke (cracked head or gasket) also check your oil see if it is correct level and correct colour not milky also sign of (cracked head or gasket), I don't think you rode her too hard, if your are traveling fast the amount of air pushing through the radiator will keep her cool, I always found they heat up when start stopping traffic so a fan override switch helps with traffic cooling

Anyway a >260kmh fine for the bar room wall with a picture of your 12r framed together will make you smile long after the sting of paying for the fine is gone
Down here in OZ you would get a one way trip to jail for "hooning" at that speed anything 40k over the limit is frowned upon but the plus side the police won't chase you over 160kmh "too dangerous" they just sit and wait at your home for you


get your 12 sorted out and running correctly you will love her but be warned she has an evil side Craig

the guys that run these motors in the mini sprint cars routinely run them in the blinking zone on the temp gauge

I figured the popcorn machine reference meant that the coolant was getting pressurized, Or there was coolant in the oil ..

You’re right. Bike @ the shop and filthy coolant was not helping. Still to see the damage. Rode 2 days ago to the bike shop and again on just 2kmh but with 40’C got it very hot again. Waiting for the veredict tomorrow 🍀
