ZX12 but looking at ZX14

I'm new to the forum but I come to you guys humbly seeking advice. I purchased a 2000 ZX12 in November and I love the bike. The only thing is that it does not love me back. It's been down more than it's been up. I understand that the bike is 19 years old but it's frustrating as hell not being able to ride it. I purchased this bike with 25,000 miles for $3000 and it has a custom paint job, PC, Muzzy exhaust and chrome rims. It's a nice looking bike but damn it I want to ride. I'm not a bike mechanic but since buying this bike I've bought and replaced the the stator and rectifier..TWICE!! Typical issues that I've seen in several of the threads in here. Here's my dilemma...I am looking at a brand new 2018 ZX14 and am almost ready to pull the trigger. Unfortunately I'm not rich so I would love to pass up this deal and get my money's worth out of the ZX12. Help me please. Should I pull the trigger on the 14 or buckle down and work it out with my 12? Like I mentioned I'm not a mechanic but I don't mind putting in some work.

Which suits you the best? In my opinion the 12r is a SPORT tourer and the 14r is a sport TOURER.

A one year old bike will probably have fewer issues than a 19 year old bike.

You need to sit down and really decide what you want from the bikes. I have been fortunate. I have a 2000 A1 zx12r and the only issue i have had is a failed cam sensor. I have thought about moving to the 14 but the 12r is a great bike and i always come home smiling ( ok grinning like a cheshire cat) every time i go out on her.

Hello. I've had my new to me 2000 ZX12R for about 4 months. If I had not turned wrenches on it for 3 weeks straight I would have been very financially frustrated with this motorcycle. It needed so much when I got it. I did have to farm out the fork seal replacement which cost me a pretty penny. However that's a fraction of what this bike needed with my parts and repair bills would have potentially costed nearly as much as the motorcycle cost me.. I think you'll always be frustrated with this 19 year old motorcycle when shop rates and parts ding you for $300 $500 $700 at a time .... maybe more. One thing to consider is eventually a new ZX-14 will be out of warranty and will require shop rates and parts. Perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to begin some minor wrenching on your ZX12R? You learn so much about these when you are working on them yourself and truly stay in tune with your bike. Good luck with your decision!
