Talking First Track day ever...

So I did my first ever track day... -Had a GREAT time

The track is short and tight (see pic) and I have to say that a ZX12R is probably not the best weapon to use riding a tight track like this even with the upgraded suspension components... A track a little less tight and me and my bike would probably have felt more at home. That said, I will also say that doing a track day is a good "ego check", I have so much more to learn.... This track day was more a "free for all", or the group I was in was. You had slow, medium and a couple of fast riders in the same group, made things a little interesting before I got the feel of the dynamics. (I am "medium" rider)

Half of the track with the more fast/flowing corners felt really good, but I struggled with the tight half. If you look at the photo of the track, the turn that I had the most difficulty with is the decreasing radius turn (look at the middle of the photo of the track). It was just weird, elevation goes up just before you start your left turn, also there was a huge bump just before you come into the turn, then you turn in (left) and the elevation falls (downhill) as you ride through it, I just could not figure this turn out even though I looked at how other riders (faster/better ones) took it. In my mind I did exactly the same thing, but still "-Nope"... The elevation difference really messed with my head.. I have never had any issues with decreasing radius turns when it's "flat"...

Any way... Had a great time and I will do more track days... Also learned a new "saying".. One of the instructors I talked with told me to turn out my knee more to get a better body (hip) position, well he said like this -More BTA, think BTA damn it!!! -I was like what the F..k is BTA??? Simple -BTA = BallsTowardsApex... and everything else will follow ... so true and it works very well though it had me cracking up inside my helmet as I did my next session mumbling to my self -BTA, BTA....

Great fun isn't it!

I too am a "medium" group rider, and have done several track days at Phillip Island, though only once each year (2 day track ride). I agree, it lets you know exactly where you are in the pecking order! Also it lets you become more familiar with the bike, how it performs, how you perform and the gap between the two, that hopefully decreases with experience.

It can be quite overwhelming the first time on a track, but addictive, all part of the great riding experience!

Cheers Don

Yeah, it was a good "ego" check. I definitely learned fast that -Nope! I still have a lot of things to learn/to get better at. One can NOT compare street riding with track riding, it is so different even though similar, but still not the same.. The thing that I really learned just after one track day was that my bike is capable of so much more than I though it would. It was never the bike that held me back, it was ME and only me... That's the "ego" thing again -Stupid huh?...

After the track day my confidence and my "trust" for the bike has gone up so much and I can't explain it in any other way than I feel more "free" now when I ride, because I know for a fact that my bike has such good handling qualities.. -Yes, I knew it had to be good after I did the suspension mods, but damn, I never realized how amazingly good handling it has now. Way more than I am capable of... I think my "mistrust" towards it is because of how bad it handled before I made the suspension mods, even though I knew that after the mods it's not bad any more, I still did not "trust" it... -Now I do! I'm just amazed of what doing one track day has changed everything for for me as a rider towards the better...

I also think that me doing my first track day on a short, tight and technical track was better than going out on a longer and faster track. Reason is, I do not think I would have struggled as much as I did if I had been on a longer and faster track. I really had to concentrate on my riding because the track was so tight and technical. I had several -Oooh Fu%K moments and that just made me concentrate ever harder with a better end result... I will absolutely ride this particular short track more before I go and ride the long and fast tracks...

One can see in the pic below just how high my concentration level is... This might sound stupid but when I was out riding I actually thought about me being a Cheetah hunting a Gazelle.. I think I even "Roared" a couple of time... -Yes, I know, only Lions roar, not Cheetah's, but -Hey, this was/is my imagination, so... ...Just fun mind games to keep the concentration level high...

/Tom

Ps. In the second pic, if you are wondering -NO! The dude on the R1 riding behind me never caught up, and believe me he tried...

Did some trackdays way back in the days with my R1 turbo. It was fun but if I would go back to the track I would like to have a dedicated track bike. Nothing fancy like an old cbr 600 or something.
