Hey guys,

....I appreciate all the feed back! This is my first fuel injected bike! I am old school. Carbs and headers. I was hesitant about going fuel injection, but all my friends convinced me that this was the way to go, and so far so good. On all my other bikes when you slapped a header on with the stock jetting, it ran lean, backfiring out the exhaust ect. Go up 1 or 2 sizes on the main jet, raise the needles a half notch and the difference in power was very obvious. Now with this fuel injection i am totally lost. Seeing guys with computers hooked up and tuning their bikes seems overwelming to me!:puzzled:...As stated as far as i know all this zx12r has on it is a full muzzy system. It pulls hard without hesitation. When you let off the gas you have the crackling sound comming out the exhaust(no backfiring). So that tells me it is running lean. Problem is i don't know anyone with a zx12r with stock pipes to compare it to.If it is running lean, can the difference in power be as dramatic on a bike with carbs once the mixture is correct? Is there a simple way to find if it is running lean?:headscratch:I was talking to a mechanic today that told me to disconnect all the pollution (clean air i think), and that would cure any cracking and possible lean mixture. He also told me that this is all that is needed to get even greater performance out of my bike, and that there is no need to buy a power comander.I read an article back in the day where muzzy took a 2000 zx12r and installed one of their pipes, changed the air filter, tinkered with the fuel injection and ran a 9.50 in the quarter mile. I could do a search, but i think i would understand better from getting some feedback. Where do i go from here? I want to spend the least amount of money to get the best bang for the buck. I would appreciate you helping this newbie out.:runaway:

well you have about as much bang for your buck as any sane human could or should need lol

i think a power commander is a worthwhile investment but if it runs well then fine.

removing the clean air is a good thing as it sorts some of the unnecessary fuelling probs you get with legislation.

but there will be lots of what too's and what not's on this so enjoy the bike and as for carbs yes they were good in there day but FI is king end of

get ivans block off plate kit removes clean air cleaned the popping for me plus alot more room for changing plugs its a bitch with the clean air crap still in there lol
...........Did you notice any difference in power once you did this?, or did it just get rid pf the popping? I see that Muzzy has a custom power comander for the 2000 zx12r for about $350 designed to work with one of their pipes. Would i leave the clean air in place and add the commander, or take the clean air out and add the commander. Is the power gain worth the $350? Sorry for all the questions, but like i said i am totally new to fuel injection-tuning.:tard:
Thanks...

Welcome, Speed.

As annotated above the popping you here is the Kleen-Air. In a nutshell the Kleen-Air injects airbox air through a valve just aft of the exhaust valve to help burn unburned exhaust gas before it gets to the catalytic converter.

You will notice the backfiring (yes, it's backfiring) much more with an aftermarket pipe because the stock pipe is loaded with baffles AND has a cat-converter in it to muffle the sound.

Do the Kleen-Air block off (I've got a document floating around here somewhere - post if you can't find it) and you'll alleviate the backfire. The stock pipe SUCKS and weighs a ton and there is no reason to lose sleep over it being gone.

That being said, fuel injection is the way to go and that is coming from a guy that has rebuilt more QuadraJets, Thermo-Quads and Hollys than I care to admit. ;-)

I like the PowerCommander.....I can run any fuel map I want without the hassle of the
main jet change....which was fun when I was 25 years younger...
you can still read your plugs ....
but thats assuming im correct about chocolate brown residue being close to ideal
and that could be considered a hassle to some

.........Once i do the kleen-air block off will i pick up any horsepower? If not, i would probally leave everything the way it is, because the "backfiring" sounds pretty mean.:pistols:

My AR-15 sounds mean/good/evil when it goes off.

The backfiring does not. It sounds like an ill tuned bike puking.

But hey, if you like it throw it against the wall and see what sticks. :)

I'm good with it if you are. :)
