I am ordering Michelin Power Pure Set the question is which rear tire? Anyone have an opinion

Better handling -- 190/55

A little more stable -- 190/50

Would have to re-do it with the base all the same, to represent the same rim width.

That diagram gives a basic representation.

Really, the 190 and 200/50 are more of a "C" shape

Think of the 50 series as a fairly smooth radius, flater in the center
Smoother, slower turn in since the radius is constant

While the 190 and 180/55 are more of a "V" or "U" shape...

Think of the 55 series are a more pointy shape, with steeper sidewalls
Designed to give you more rubber at lean angles
Snappier, quicker turn in since the center is more pronounced

Keep in mind the 180 on our rims is stretched pretty good, so you can get to the edge and beyond easier than you can a 190 of either type.

When I get home I'll take pics, as I have all four sizes of tires mounted on rims right now.

I was looking at a side view of the 2011 ZX10. The tires on it are so tall that they almost look like bias ply tires. I've been out of the loop for 5 years, what changed?
technology...

That is a 190/55.

Some more info from Dunlops website... there are variances in width and OD amongst MFG, even among different models in the same MFG, but recommended rim width is pretty standard. Remember overall width will change with different rim sizes as well.

180-55-ZR-17

A 180's ideal rim width is 5.50
A 180 can go on a 6.00 rim
A 180's overall diameter is 24.96
A 180's overall width is 6.97

190-50-ZR-17

A 190's ideal rim width is 6.00
A 190 can go on a 5.50 rim
A 190's overall diameter is 24.72
A 190's overall width is 7.32

200-50-ZR-17

A 200's ideal rim width is 6.50
A 200 can go on a 6.00 rim
A 200's overall diameter 24.92
A 200's overall width is 7.64

I need to find the specs on 190/55 but it is taller than the 180 or 200.
Note the 180/55 and 200/50 are almost identical height.

You old-timers have forgotten one thing, 12r is not made for the twisties.

:thefinger: :banghead: :runaway: :loco:

Yeah, right!

Also the shape will change from mfg to mfg. i found the 2ct's v shaped compared to the 014's i switched from. both were the same size.

Yeah, shape varies between brands as well. The 180/55 on our 6 inch rim is stretched enough it is more of a V no matter brand.

Michelin and Pirelli tend to have a more pronounced V shape than Dunlop and Bridgestone do in their sport tires. The sidewall on my BT-016 190/55 are pretty steep..

more along the lines of a U with a pointy end.. :loco:

You will see the pronounced difference when I get them side by side.

Pilot Power 180/55
Dunlop Roadsmart 190/50
Bridgestone BT-016 190/55
Shinko 003 200/50

I'll put them side by side to illustrate, plus see the height difference. They are all on 6" 12R wheels, so I can measure widths as well.

Unless your using it for a weekend scratcher power pure 190/55 will suit you just fine, it will handle slightly better but will not last you what so ever!
If for example you use it a lot and you ride quickly like me! and want stability go for a 190/50 I'm using bridgestone bt023 and they r awesome! They r sport touring, last forever and they r sticky

Just recently put on a 200/55 rear and I have had to dig out the stilts !! Only been out a couple of times but felt very stable. No heroics as this was a few weeks ago when it was still only just above freezing here.

Feels significantly higher than the 190/55 on it before, which was my favourite over the 200/50. Had to raise the hugger again.
