I don't chime in regularly because, well, as a newbie I can't yet contribute much.

I'm glad to hear oils mix well, but have an additional question that may save my having someone install a new head gasket. Please forgive my gross ignorance but "the unasked question is the stupid question".

1) oil level is checked with the bike on the side stand - per the manual, right ?

2) 20 minutes without running is plenty of time for oil to return to the pan for assessing the oil level, right?

3) If there is no oil in the gauge, and transmission action has gotten pretty abrasive recently on silkolene synthetitic with 1500 miles, I probably need oil, right?

4) So, in a panic I hit the nearest Kragen about 100 miles from home, pick up a quart of their 10-40w mobile synth for motorcycles and procede to bring the oil level up to the hi mark with the full quart.

Does this put the head gasket at risk? What's the worst that can happen? And is it better to run low on oil or take a risk mixing possibly different weights and possibly putting too much oil in?

This morning I check the oil level and it's about 3mm above the high-level mark. What's the deal? Please. The bike gets its 15k tune-up this week by Scuderia.

Thanks for any advice.

Psycho - Thanks for clearing that up for me. It's what I originally thought, but the manual seemed to say different. Next time out comes the center stand.

It's been about 10 years since my last bike and I thought maybe things have become more "convenient" :). The 12 was an impulse head first dive back into the fun. I'll pull the manual out again and see if I misread it. The manual also said to check chain tension with the bike on the side stand - wierd.

Can I assume that since the bike leans to the left and the level gauge is on the right, any oil measurement I take with the bike on the side stand is going to be arbitrarily low?

Am I at risk of blowing a head gasket?

Blitz - about 14 years ago probably from someone commenting on my leaking 500 intercepter. Please tell me it's one of those childhood superstitions. I may have heard it from a dealership. Between the fear of blowing a head gasket and stripping a drain bolt, oil changes have been a bit of anxiety.

I'm a newbie, but a lot less lazy than back in the day.
