Ok, here is a question for anyone.

I've seen advertised a stainless steel mesh oil filter for about $110US. It is said to provide better filter than stock or aftermarket. Can anyone give me a clue as to whether or not it would be a bad idea to buy one of these or to just keep using stock filters? I'm running Mobil 1 MX4T oil since the 1500 mile mark & I'm on the 12k mark now.

Please give me some ideas...Thanks guys.

SOmeone here has one and the problems are, the "0" RIng which they do not send spares and you must buy them and they had a problem with the assembly coming loose once, but the problem was later resolved, but as much of an experimenter as I am, I am not ready for them yet!

HEy dudes I reached 500 miles this weekend and i changed my oil this weekend! I used the kawachem recommended by the dealer! however i am concerned that the dealer told me the 2003 zx12r only needs 3 quart of oil even after a filter changed!! I am concerned because if i remember i though my 2000 zx12 took a little more oil! Can anyone help me on this!

I've read articles that go both ways on this debate about car and bike specific oils.I personally run Mobile 1 car synthetic 10w30 and have 17000 miles on my 02 and no problems whatsoever.I do not drag race so no heavy launches but i run the piss out of it on the gap and Cherohala and have never had a clutch problem.I just make it a habit to change my oil and filter every time i change my rear tire,[2000 to 2200 mile]For the most part the concensus is that there is a lot of scare tactics involved with the bike specific oils {transmission shear, dry start, etc}so the shops can sell you oil for 5-6 buck a quart instead of 3.50 for car synthetic.I believe Sport Rider mag had an in depth oil test last year and there conclusion was inconclusive.Basicly said that all premium synthetics would be fine. The mobile1 car oil more than held it's own against the so called bike specific and was superior in many aspects, such as retention of viscosity. So take it for what its worth

This thread is awesome! I am always amazed how much I can learn by reading stuff on this website, this oil thread fascinates me, almost makes me wanna run out to garage and change my oil right now. By the way, I run Honda HP4 semi-synthetic in my bike, because I can get it very reasonably from a friend who works at a Honda shop. Please, somebody tell me this oil is good stuff for my 12, or my nerves will be shot :?

Hey Ninja 12,
I hope it is ok with everyone here if I answer a question about an oil filter when everyone else is talking about oil....
The filter you are talking about Ninja is outstanding IMO. It is a Scott and has finns to double as an oil cooler. Another feature is a fairly large magnet which will detect anything wrong with the motor in advance as well as keep your oil fairly clean of debris. It is called (by Scott) a lifetime filter and can be cleaned with any type of carb or brake cleaner and water and then let dry and put back on. The outer part of the filter looks to be billet. It is fairly expensive however our bikes are worth it. 8)

Even though this thread was buried I felt compelled to add my 2 cents! It is VERY important to let the inital 'break-in' oil run through the ENTIRE 500 mile cycle as V.H. stated! The tiny particles help the break-in process. After that you should run it another 1500 miles (to the 2000 mile mark) before doing your second change. I personally change mine every 2K (whenever the odometer reads even) and have NEVER had an issue and have had VERY GOOD horsepower results.

I also have a question as to what good a magnet is going to do in an engine comprised of 95% + alluminum? $110 for a filter sounds a bit extreme but if that's your 'gig' then go for it. I can't imagine it would be a 'bad thing' but doubt you'll get your $$$ worth out of it's function. Filters today are very good so it's just a preference thing. I'll be switching over to synth when I hit 2K (second change). I'm about 15 miles away from my first change on my '03 12R that I got about a month ago. I appreciate all the input on this thread although I will be selective which info I use. I also saw a recent study about the differences in motorcycle and auto oil and they found very little if any differences, BUT, I am also concerned about losing the stock clutch because the oil is "too good" so will have to research it further.
