Hey guys,

I've been storing this 1981 GPz550 for the last 27 years.
Serial # 000025, Motor # 000030

I'm at a point in my life where I know I'll never ride it again, and I don't have
the money or resources to rebuild it.

I have no idea what its worth, or how to go about selling it.
(My friends tell me to stay away from Paypal and Western Union)

It does need a lot of work.
The Engine was rebuilt at 20,000 miles. (Bike now has 23,480 miles)
Balanced\Blue-Printed
Bored to a 605
Racing Cam
26mm Mikuni Carbs
Electronic Ignition

I'm sure the motor needs to be torn down and rebuilt, but I know its in excellent condition. (It has been in storage for the last 27 years)

Any idea what this bike might be worth?

Your input is greatly appreciated.

There's not a lot of them around anymore. Hard to tell what it might be worth, but I think the old addage that something is worth what someone is willing to pay holds true.

If it was a 750 I'd probably be on my way to the Springs cash in hand. I had a '82 GPz 750 and loved it. It was my first new bike.

I'd figure out what you think you need for it and try to sell it on Craigslist first.

There is an 85' GPz900 on Ebay with similar mileage, condition but no title for $800.

I've used PayPal many times and have no beefs. The issue with Western Union is many times when people offer to pay for it with Western Union its a scam.

My buddy bought a race bike from Florida off Ebay and it was a nightmare. They shipped the bike with water in it (in the middle of winter) through a storm in Chicago and when we got it everything had frozen up. The seller had his money and my buddy was screwed.

I haven't tried to start it.
I'm pretty sure the carbs are out of sync...one was really sticky and took some lube and tlc to free it.
I had run pure synthetic through the motor before I stored it, no idea how the
motor faired through 27 years...but it was in dry storage.

A few more pics from the day I pulled it out:

Hi Dave,

My name is Steve, I live here in COS and I purchased your old 1981 GPz550 from your next door neighbor. I am in the process of restoring it to it's former glory. I would be grateful if we could talk for ten minutes or so I could learn the history of this raucious red rocket and what cams were installed so I could set the valve lash correctly etc.

Hope you get this message and here is a current photo from my garage. I currently have the valve cover off and I am trying to id the "Race Cams" I see a marking M "symbol" E on the Intake Cams. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Mikuni 26mm Flatslides, didn't even know they existed till I bought this GPz550. The hairdryer was needed to free the carbs from the boots.

Here is a photo of markings on the intake cam. I know where Andrews and Yosh are marked but not these?

Dave lives here in the Colorado Springs as do I.

Between The GPz 550 Forum & GS Resource Forum and interested gearheads that love classic GPz550 I believe we have identified the cams to be Moriwaki Engineering Cams. The first photo shows the Moriwaki logo, second shows a clean picture of the Cams. Although new here, I would like to ask a favor. Does anyone have Moriwaki cams installation instructions in their magazine collection, aftermarket catalog, performance archive etc.

I don't know what the Moriwaki valve lash specs are, opening/closing or max lift of their cams. With that information I can work backwards, measure these cams and also degree them.

Any help would be appreciated, sorry I posted in the wrong place

TIA & Merry Christmas

Good idea but Moriwaki Japan does not accept product related questions. They want consumers to deal with their "Importers". I already forwarded the question through Escondido Cycle Center last week. No reply so far

I just wanted to share the start up video of my 1981 Kawasaki GPz550 which required a full frame off restoration, engine rebuild etc.

Aftermarket goodies: Wiseco 615 Big Bore, Yoshimura 4 into 1, Mikuni TM27 D1 Flatslides which were made only for GPz/KZ550 models, Dyna S ignition, Dyna coils, Racer Supply fork brace & Fox Street Shox.

The 1981 Kawasaki GPz550 restoration thread is located at the GSResource Forum: Other Projects. Sorry all the original pictures were held hostage by Photobucket so I am slowly reinserting the photos I took over the years from 2013 when the PO started this thread.
