I have the same problem with the oil leaking from under my bike right under the passenger seat. Its only doing it on the left side of my bike. Can anyone tell me why before I have my mechanic check it out?
.

You need to do the Stator Plug Connector Mod,

You more than likely DO NOT NEED TO DO THE HEADLIGHT FIX.

Thanx Dave.

Hi guys, after all the advises i gave you about ditching that f... connector and not doing it for myself ..... it finally happened to me

I just got back from a 2200 miles round trip from nova scotia, the day before comeback i noticed that i had no headlights and then it hits me !!! why me !!!!! I had checked the connector before leaving home and it was dry and perfect so i taught no need to fix it right now.

I know a 100% sure that it is not an oil problem, the wires and the connector where dry, it's just a shitty connector problem.

I am making this post to help some of you to fix the stator and the headlights trouble for a ridiculous price.

This is the kind of tools you will need:

Image

First the stator:

1- get some good crimping lugs insulated or not for 16-14 awg (if they are insulated just rip the insulation off)

Image

2- don't forget to put the heat shrink on the wires and then crimp and solder the connexion like the next picture.

Image

3- Shrink the shrink and it should look like that.

Tie everything with Zip ties and you get a clean solid job like the next pic.

Ok... This just happened to me. Reading this thread lead me to unplug the connector and there was oil. A very small amount, but the bike was already having the dead battery issue. It's an 01 with 65,872 miles. I purchased it new and it never gave me one day of trouble until now. What is the "best" rectifier to use? Will the dealer still fix this warranty issue? I keep reading about rick's rectifier... Will it give me 65,000 miles? Is OEM better?

If you have never had the recall work done, I would definitely check with your dealer... I'm pretty sure Kawazooski is obligated to do "The Fix", regardless of age/mileage... Might be worth checking out...

I think you can run your VIN# on their website to check status...

I will check with the dealer Monday. I did run my vin and it shows an outstanding recall issues... Valve stem replacement and stator issue. What about an aftermarket rectifier? Any suggestions?

I COULD EASILY BE WRONG ABOUT THIS, but I think the stator issue (warranty) will include rectifier fix if there was damage... I think I'd try that first, because it's free/cheap AND it is supported by Kawasaki...

However, I (like you) have read good things about the Rick's unit, & would not hesitate to buy & install one if I needed it tomorrow... IMHO, it is probably a better product than the OEM... Long ago I had all the recall work done, and (knock wood) things have held up so far...

Just my $.02...

I talked to the Kawasaki dealer... They are going to do the recall fix and replace the rectifier. I didn't think they would after 11 years but they are. If not for this forum I wouldn't have known about the recall. Thanks to everyone.

I have an interesting case

I had the impression the 2003 model had escaped this problem, and as I own an 03 registered bike I thought no more of it until I was affected.

Having suffered two dead batteries, wire meltdown, and a blown regulator resulting in total electrical failure I've just discovered that despite the mod being performed by KUK before sale at the dealership it has now suffered that very same failure.

Is there any way I can tell the mod was actually carried out, what should I look for or be apparent? Yes, I am doubting their word here as it would be suspicious to anyone experiencing the same fault this mod was supposed to fix!

2003 did not escape...mine didn't anyway. I had the creeping oil and burned wires, but it didn't take out anything else.

If I recall correctly, the 2004's had the rework from the factory, but check the threads, its been awhile.

As for being able to tell if the work was done...I'd say yes. I don't recall the exact procedure they used, but you should be able to tell. If you search around a bit, you will be able to find more pictures of the dealer repair. I fixed mine my damn self because the dealership was pretty lost on the whole matter.

My initial guess is that they went into the computer and checked the block without performing the procedure..and billed KHI the hours.

Thanks,
can't find any photo's showing the mod so it would be great if someone could add theirs here.

I'm thinking it's highly unlikely this same failure would occur if the mod had been done. If that's the case my only recourse would be legal action but I'd have to prove it hadn't been done.

Bike is in a dealers in France. Regulator is setting me back over ÂŁ120, add at least 2hrs work, plus another new battery that puts the bill at well over 430 :scared:

Thanks Blitz, that was the reason I originally started this was to get everyone to check their bikes due to how easy this is to overlook until it is to late. Remeber one drop of oil is all I saw drip, but I saw it and knew something was wrong.

There are some guys over at Bikeland having the same problems. I have a picture on the 1st page of this thread that shows the connector. Remove your seat, and it is right there. No need to remove anything but the seat to check the connector. The hardest thing to do was getting the connector apart.

I hope everyone takes this seriously, and if not, ask Mono what can happen. PLEASE CHECK YOURS CLOSELY!!

FIRE HAZARD!!!!

Your leak is not caused by the stator wiring that leaks in the rear if your is leaking from the left side fairing check the thread below you just need to replace the cam sensor o-ring

and also this thread

Hi there,i purchased 3 weeks ago an A1 model.I am from europe so its the european model. After fixing some minor problems with the bike(now only clutch remains) i noticed the oil leakage under the left side of the passenger's seat.First noticed before 1 week, when the alarm installed.the guy told me why is there oil around the harness, but i cant give him an answer due as a new owner of this bike.i cleaned afterwards and rode the bike normal for one week.yesterday i went on a fast trip, everything ok the bike was running smoothly and like hell :p
But today i changed the rear tyre and...all the undertray spilled with oil, license plate same, tyre, hugger and chainguard full with oil leakage.drops from the tail all the way down. So,all i have to do is open the big round black plug and?silicone everything?many thanks, nick.

Kawaboy, the fact you are posting in this sticky thread shows you have at least looked for a solution in the right place! There are three sticky threads you may have noticed dedicated to this problem, I have just recently posted on one of them.

This is a common problem with the zx12r, at least the earlier models, if you read (unless you already have) from the beginning of each post you will get the idea of how people have tried to remedy this. A lot of the info is repeated in each thread. I have just done another repair to mine (A1 2000 model) in which I have replaced most of the stator loom with slightly thicker grade wiring and created a connection point close to the stator as well as at the usual stator/regulator connection under the left rear seat area (this is where you are noticing the oil leak). Time will tell if I'm successful with this approach or not!

Your main job is to replace the stator /reg connector as described in each thread to help eliminate the oil wicking up and cooking it, one thought is the OEM wiring overheats even without the oil in it as it's possibly a gauge too small, the choice in how you do it from those posted is yours. Kawasaki did a recall on this with limited positive results, and was merely to plug the wiring inside the stator before it exits at the stator cover with high temp silicone - which usually melted/cracked away and the problem resumed!

Later models used different connectors at the stator/reg end which I think helped out a bit but I don't know if even that was a permanent cure - others with later model 12s may advise if so - either way good luck with it, these bikes are great and personally I am prepared to persist with a fix for this in the hope it gets cured properly. If all else fails, get a 14r!!

Don.

Kawaboy, just read your post on the show us your 12 thread, sorry I'm a bit late in giving info on stator leak repair as it looks like you already have it done! That's the problem with living on the other side of the world with time differences. Good luck with the bike - same colour as mine!!

Don.

Hey Don,
Thanks for your thorough reply! When posted here yesterday i was a bit confused for what to do,(my i-phone still with oil from yesterday navigation through the posts here ) replacing the connectors or just silicon all the wires and plug but i choose to slice a bit!everything seems ok now, thanks to all the info here!(the official kawasaki mechanic of mine never heard of this issue,so imagine me yesterday trying to be Sherlock Holmes for a bit :rotflmao:)
14r?Oh,you are waking up other dreams right now !Silver Colour Rocks!!
Many thanks,
Nick

Hope this helps

Hi All,

Photo taken during engine removal of my 12R A1 found lots of oil in this area and will read more into this thread to try and resolve this while fault finding noise in crankcase gearbox area. I am no expert and this is my first time trying my hand at this so going by the seat of my pants and fingers crossed. I am on another thread with a different name as this site would not let me use the same name.
