Ah, Tires!! ...I was looking for a fight!!

I have run the HPX tires & I love them... If I hadn't started using GreenMamba's Michelin M2 race pull-offs, I'd still be running them...

IMHO, the Pilot Sport family is the best all-around tires out there today... I would assume that's true for your 9 as well as my 12!! They will require a few more minutes warm-up time (compared to Dunlops, for instance), but they have superior grip after that... I do not count tire milage as a requirement on a sportbike, so don't even ask me about that!!

 I'm not an expert, and many will disagree w/ me on this... See disclaimer below!!

ok...ive tryed heaps of tyres and rate the sports high.....compared to the 207 eg (stock fittment on old 12s) they have more grip when cold, and more gripo when hot though i found them a little unpredictable on the limit they would step out in a hurry..where the 207s had less grip...but easier 2 slide....but ive been running pilot sports ever since...getting the powers soon....if u want all out grip go for the pilot race h2 simply awesome but they wont last long and cost a fortune...the pilot hpx was specifically designed for use on the 12..i was getting 4000kms hard riding out of one..on the road

Truthfully, I hate Dunlops :x Even though I"m still in the break in period I can't wait to get rid of these Lops. I will be getting the Chrome Wheels soon and at that time I wll fit them with the Michelin HPX. I've heard alot of good things about them :D

I have HPX and really like them a lot. But they were designed for big heavy bikes like the 12 or the Busa. Nice stiff sidewall and gives a solid planted feel, no squirm. That being said, for a lighter bike, I prefer the Pirelli Diablo Corsas. Awesome tires. Not the Diablos, but the Diablo Corsas.

I had the HPX's on my 00. I agree with Millsi when you get out on the edge they get a bit unpredictable and they will surprise/scare you. Mostly with the rear stepping out when you are not expecting it. Also like it has been said they do take a bit longer to warm up. Some times they would feel like they are warm when they were not and it would slide. I only found this to be true when i was out with Outlaw & Ninjadude and pushing them pretty hard.  Milage was great when rob and norm were averging 1500-2000 miles out of their softer tires i got about 6000 out of my rear. And thats not being nice to them. The hpx's are a harder compound than the reg pilot sports. That being said i do have 1 word of advice if you get caught out in the rain, BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!! Most peeps don't even think about wet wether performance. Wich is cool cause most peeps don't willingly ride in the rain. But sooner or later you will get caught out. And when you do the hpx's are down right scarry!

Don't get me wrong im not trying to slam the hpx's. All in all they are a good tire with great mileage. Its just been my experience that the last 5-6% is where things get a little ugly.

I just finished a set of HPX's and am now on the new 014's.

I wont run the HPX's again, but I will try the new Pilot Power....apppearently much better.

014's are VASTLY superior in grip and warm up time. I cant comment on the treadwear as of yet, but I got about 5000kms out of the Pilots and still had a little left.

014's - Awesome.

like the hpx, they do suck in the rain compared to d208's but they are still very good, rode most of this last set of hpx in the rain.

I just sent micheklin an email about a week ago and asked for info on hat woulf fit my bike my reaer is 6.25 and i wanted to run h2 or powers, they said they would send me a manual for all tires on how to judge what will fit your bike.

SO that is what I am waiting on, then whatever is the smallest grippiest tire will go on, i.e. if take offs will be safe they are going on. lol

waltdog - The good thing here is that with the 12's appetite for tires, you'll be able to try as many different types as you want!!

Good luck!!

I don't actually have a 12 yet,but my 9 needs tires and Iam workin on getting the 12 soon. I know the HPX is for heavier bikes (busa ,12,XX)
but hell the 9 is kindof a tank! good idea to run them on the 9 or should I get the the plain ole pilot sports?

  Sorry - As the thread developed, I forgot you were looking for tires for a ZX-9!! Anyway, I think the HPX is a very good tire for your application... However, the cautionary words above about wet riding are worth noting...

I seldom ride in really wet weather, and my opinion of wet performance is of questionable value... However, the tread pattern isn't made for rain, IMHO!!

At the moment I've got a pilot sport on the front and a pilot road on the rear. I've ran a 190 hpx rear and also a regular 180 pilot sport rear. Won't use the rears again. I find the pilot road to be allmost as sticky and last a whole lot longer, not to mention the shocking lack of grip (pilot sport) in the wet.
btw, I'm not sure they make a 180hpx :? , I don't care if they do, cause I won't get one.

I just mounted a set of HPXs on my '02 and can only compare them to the stock 208s, but I like them much better... feel more stable at 175mph and have good predictable grip, even in cooler weather.

I just replaced HPX's with a set of regular Pirelli Diablo's with a 190 rear. I think the HPX's are overpriced and they didn't impress me all that much. The Diablo's feel great! I run Diablo Corsas on the track (on my F4i) and regular Diablo's on the street (ZX12). I'm a converted Pirelli man all the way. You won't go wrong with Diablo's.

I was originally going to go with some HPX's but after reading other forums last nite and doing some research the Pirelli Diabolos. They seem to be the way to go! I haven't heard one negative thing about them. Also, I hear they do well in the rain. Which is good on days you may get caught pushing your luck like I did Sunday nite on some oem Dunslops  The only other dealing I had with Pirelli's are the pair I had on my car awhile back and those were the stickiest tires I've had  Although they didn't last long. Oh well what do you expect from a Z rated tire 8)
